Sentimentale - Satoshi Yagisawa
Premiered by Funabashi Hiagshi High School under the direction of Shinichiro Tagawa in March, 2015, Sentimentale is an excerpt from Yagisawa's Trumpet Concerto. That work, commissioned by the Japan Air Self-Defense Force Central Band with trumpet soloist Kenichi Kurishu, premiered in 2003 with many subsequent performances. In 2013, the Concerto had its U.S. debut with Kagoshima Joho HS and Robert Sullivan, principal trumpet of the Cincinnati Symphony. I received many warm regards and compliments on the work, especially for the second movement. However, I also heard regrets that the interlude required a trumpet soloist. I remembered the words of Mr. Tagawa, who had collaborated with me on works such as"And Then the Ocean Glows" and"Hymn to the Infinite Sky". Ten years earlier he suggested that I arrange that movement for full band so that it could be more widely enjoyed. Though I agreed then, only now have I had the chance to realize this idea, as Mr. Tagawa presented me with the opportunity of this musical creation and world premier.This new arrangement was entitled "Sentimentale" by Mr. Tagawa. I composed the piece with his constant consultation, discussing grade level and instrumentation, and how the work should be a chorale etude for both concert and daily training. The word nexus is defined as a tie or link between people and events. Nexus for solo trumpet and band includes several links between composer James Curnow and educator Alfred Watkins, to whom the work is dedicated. A well-knowntheme (particularly to Mr. Watkins' students) is drawn upon as the piece utilizes two primary musical settings - an energetic and agile scherzo that appears in the beginning and again at the end, contrasted with an expressiveballad theme. The soloist at the premiere (and on the recording) is Christopher Watkins, Alfred's son. This is a well-crafted and rewarding work for soloist and band alike. As a trumpet player Andr Waignein has composed many pieces for this instrument; extremely electrifying pieces meant for young trumpet-players, and more demanding works for professionals.With his rhapsody Andr Waignein wanted to compose a piece in which spontaneity dominates and in which the virtuosity, sonority and style of the soloist is featured to its maximum. Although the piece is not one of the most difficult, it nevertheless places high musical demands on the soloist. Following an impressive orchestral opening the soloist comes to the fore, with long phrases followed by more dynamic and rhythmic passages. The second movement gives evidence of extreme sensitivity andoffers the soloist the opportunity to prove that the trumpet (flugel horn) can be a stirring and emotional instrument. The third movement is the most spectacular. The orchestra actively participates with increasingly delicate interventions. The soloist can display all the possibilities offered to him by his instrument. With a long sostenuto on the trumpet (flugel horn) the beautiful rhapsody ends.

£99.99March of the Robot Army - Philip Sparke
March of the Robot Army was commissioned by Linda Anzolin & Giordano-Bruno Tedeschi for Campobanda 2019, with funds made available by JUST ITALIA. Campobanda is an Italian summer music camp for 8- to 18-year-olds (held in Camposilvano in 2019) which has a different theme every year. The theme for 2019 was 'science fiction', so composer Philip Sparke chose to write a robot march. After a quirky introduction featuring trumpet calls and chromatic figures, the main theme appears in a minor mode on clarinet and tenor sax and is then taken up by the full band. A change of key heralds a new theme, led by the trumpet and again repeated by the full ensemble. A further change of key introduces a legato 'trio' melody over a rather robotic accompaniment: instruments are added bit by bit until a climax is reached. Small motifs from the introduction then lead back to a full recapitulation, revisiting the first two themes in new guises before finishing the march with a flourish.
