Dutch composer, artist and poet Adriaen Valerius is mostly remembered today for his collection of 79 songs for voice and lute or cittern, published posthumously in 1626. Philip Sparke has taken one melody from this collection that tells of the War of Independence with Spain. The beautiful slow melody is followed by a series of lively variations to form an extremely entertaining piece that will bring great joy to all who perform and listen to it.

In Memoriam: For the Fallen was commissioned by Bolsover District Council for the Bolsover Brass Summer School 2014. It is a setting for narrator and band of Laurence Binyon's (1869-1943) poem, For the Fallen, which was first published in The Times in September 1914. Binyon was dismayed at the outbreak of war and especially concerned by the large number ofcasualties suffered by the British Expeditionary Force in the early months of the battle on the Western Front. Too old to enlist, he volunteered as a hospital orderly in France. The poem is known world-wide as the famous fourth stanza (They shallgrow not old...) has become a regular part of Remembrance Day and ANZAC Day services.In Memoriam: For the Fallen is a musical accompaniment to the poem, shadowing the mood of each stanza.

This monumental programmatic work from the pen of Rob Romeyn captures the myth and legend of Zeus, the mythical master of the gods and men. A sky god, he controls lightning, which he uses as a weapon, and thunder. It opens as Zeus becomes involved in the Trojan war, hurling lightning bolts at his opponents. The tension soon subsides as we are introduced to the eternally beautiful Hera, whom Zeus would eventually marry. The music then ensues as our story unfolds, as Zeus made his domain the mountaintops and clouds where he could survey all creation, and inflict pain and justice on all evildoers. Tension builds as Zeus battles Typhon in hand to hand combat, ending ultimately with Zeus throwing the enormous Mt. Etna at the monster, pinning him underneath. From here, the tension subsides, and a beautiful lyrical section builds to an ending of incredible power and grandeur as Zeus again reaffirms his stature as the ruler of Mt. Olympus. This exceptional work is a wonderful addition to any concert or festival performance!

Bunker Hill Overture - James Swearingen
A very strong choice for concert or contest use by very young bands, this attractive James Swearingen original evokes the first battle of the Revolutionary War and provides the director with a interesting tie-in to history classes. Ranges are reasonable. Clarinets are all below the break. An excellent teaching piece, Swearingen includes all of the elements of his music which have made his compositions both so popular and playable. Highly Recommended!

It was partly damaged in the bombing raids of the Second World War. Porco Rosso - Joe Hisaishi
From the 1992 Japanese animated film about an Italian World War I flying ace who, for a wartime misdeed, was transformed into an anthropomorphic pig. The flamboyant post-war story of Porco Rosso (Crimson Pig) battling air pirates is full of intrigue and romance, and the film's diverse and lush soundtrack is one of the more rare Studio Ghibli scorings. Mr. Tomoki Ubata, (band director at Ina Gakuen Sr. High School) assisted with medley design as we both became intrigued with the music.The sixth song, Kyouki ~ hishou (insanity & soaring), appearing on Joe Hisaishi's album "My Lost City", is often performed for his concerts. Due to its complexity I am sure this is one of Hisaishi's favorites. I also added the French chanson "Le Temps des cerises" (Antoine Renard) that Madame Gena sings in the film. This is my favorite of all chansons; I was happy to include this bittersweet, beautiful melody.The following themes are contained in the arrangement:1. Le Temps des cerises2. In the composition, the dream of a world without war is symbolized. It is the first composition in a series in which Jacob de Haan combines concert music with pop music in a style, which reminds one of film music. Later compositions in which he has reaped much success with the same formula in style are Oregon, La Storia and Utopia.
