    Window to the Sun - Thomas Doss

    The Tyrol-South Tyrol-Trentino Euroregion was founded in 1998 with the aim of promoting cross-border cooperation between the parts of Tyrol that since 1918 have been divided up over Austria and Italy. This work for concert band marks the 25th anniversary of the Euroregion. In this varied composition, Thomas Doss has used three local folk songs as a symbol of the individual regions: La Montanara (Trentino), Wohl ist die Welt so gro und weit (South Tyrol) and Das Schnste auf der Welt (Tyrol).

    This composition for concert band was commissioned by Orchesterverein Wadgassen e. V. (Saarland/Germany) and its conductor Holger Jakobs. Thomas Doss has depicted the legend of the knight Maldix vom Litermont, a fierce hunter and an excessive drinker who, despite the warnings of his mother, was killed during a driven hunt in the woods, in a magnificent way. With the portrayal of various characters, the work offers a lot of variation.

Many lost their lives in accidents throughout history, and many families lost their fathers. A Miner's Tale describes the beginning of a shift, marked by the signal on the wooden board. The foreman and the miners begin their arduous work underground. Suddenly, danger strikes, leading to a terrible collapse.Trapped beneath the rubble, the miners are overwhelmed by fear, despair, and loneliness. Only their camaraderie and the memory of their loved ones keep them going. In the darkest moment, in the dim light of their fading mining lamp, a vision of Saint Barbara - the patron saint of miners - appears before them. Shortly thereafter, they hear the sound of approaching rescue. It was only when a lost girl thanked her for her help that Ursula was redeemed from her curse and found peace. The girl had a shrine for Ursula erected at the site of her rescue.

    Today, Voestalpine is a company specialising in technology and industrial goods. Founded nearly 150 years ago, it has played an important role in the steel and iron industry throughout its history. The company displays an impressive "Contemporary History Exhibition 1938-1945" commemorating the victims of National Socialist forced labour in the factory during WWII. 'Iron Ring' refers to the company logo during that time. This work is a symphonic poem-like composition, describing different aspects of the companies' history in four musical scenes. It is a dramatic, breathtaking and impressive piece of music that will leave no one untouched. The piece features severalimpressive solos for a cello.
