"Windrider" is a celebration of life in the notorious wind found on the high plains of North America. An ever-evolving melody accompanied by evocative motivic elements and textures consistently suggest the wind. A rhythmically driving beginning is followed by a soaring lyric melody that is elaborated by thick chords that are masterfully scored. This lyric portion has elements of modern notation that keep the listener engaged and serve the music perfectly. All elements are drawn together into an explosive conclusion that unite the memorable melodies, lush harmonies and energetic rhythms showcasing all sections of the band. "Windrider" captures the imagination, catches the strong currents, and soars with them.

Starting with a mallet percussion ostinato, this contemporary ballad for developing bands would also work well as a reflective selection for more advanced ensembles or as a contrasting selection in concert or contest. Written to represent thoughts, feelings and emotions during one's life, the composition is based on the Lydian mode, which naturally gives a sense of positivity, hopefulness, inspiration, and heavenly colors. David Maslanka's Traveler, for Symphonic Wind ensemble, was commissioned in 2003 by the University of Texas at Arlington Band Alumni Association, the Delta Sigma chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi and the Gamma Nu Chapter of Tau Beta Sigma, in honor of the career contributions of Ray C. Lichtenwalter, retiring Director of bands at UT Arlington. Maslanka writes, "Ray has been a close friend and champion of my music for many years, and it was a great pleasure for me to write this piece for his final concert. The idea for Traveler came from the feeling of a big life movement as I contemplated my friend's retirement." Carl Fischer Music is excited to offer this beautifully contemplative piece in a study score format.

A Land Remembered is based on the novel of the same name by Patrick D. Smith, which tells the story of pioneering families in the early days of Florida. The piece is set in three continuous movements, each depicting elements of the story, from the open fanfare, "A New Life in a New Land" to the beautiful "On the Prairie" and the strident final movement, "Hardships on the Rugged Frontier." A depiction of a cold, snowbound winter scene. This work was written shortly after the composer I finished a little piece called Summer Song. Winter Scene originally started life as a guitar piece but was expanded in several ways when casting it for wind band. Without looking for specific imagery, the composer imagined something like the snowbound scenes found in the Renaissance art of Pieter Breugel the Elder d. 1569. The music begins with some icy dissonance in the brass before the slow processional of the tune is first stated. There is some contrasting material in the middle which changes colour and key before the main theme returns with its slightly acerbic accompaniment.Duration: 3.30

This lyrical little piece started life as a song on the subject of gold but I wanted to see if it would stand alone as an instrumental piece. The gentle lilt of the melody suggests a lullaby although the texture of the piece builds in an un-lullaby-like fashion towards the end. There is a little 'white-note' dissonance but it is basically traditional in its language. Duration: 3.40
