This celebrated song is based on a poem by Julie Hausmann (1826-1901), a Latvian teacher who was probably blind. The text draws on her personal experience and unshakeable faith in God, death and eternal life. The melody by Friedrich Silcher is written in a simple and delicate style but also draws on the grand romantic tradition of Wagner and Bruckner. Windrider
"Windrider" is a celebration of life in the notorious wind found on the high plains of North America. An ever-evolving melody accompanied by evocative motivic elements and textures consistently suggest the wind. A rhythmically driving beginning is followed by a soaring lyric melody that is elaborated by thick chords that are masterfully scored. This lyric portion has elements of modern notation that keep the listener engaged and serve the music perfectly. All elements are drawn together into an explosive conclusion that unite the memorable melodies, lush harmonies and energetic rhythms showcasing all sections of the band. A depiction of a cold, snowbound winter scene. This work was written shortly after the composer I finished a little piece called Summer Song. Winter Scene originally started life as a guitar piece but was expanded in several ways when casting it for wind band. Without looking for specific imagery, the composer imagined something like the snowbound scenes found in the Renaissance art of Pieter Breugel the Elder d. 1569. The music begins with some icy dissonance in the brass before the slow processional of the tune is first stated. There is some contrasting material in the middle which changes colour and key before the main theme returns with its slightly acerbic accompaniment.Duration: 3.30
