Green Hills Fantasy - Thomas Doss

This composition describes a landscape in the Upper Austrian region of Mhlviertel. This area was once besieged by the Celts, who spread fear and terror among the inhabitants, however the people opposed the enemy with patience and courage. Theiruncompromising love of life demonstrated how unyielding they were and finally, the Celts had to withdraw from Mhlviertel. The region is still one of the most beautiful landscapes in Austria, and the people who live there are proof that tradition andprogress are not necessarily contradictory. Green Hills Fantasy gives you a chance to hear this fantastic landscape immortalized in a wonderful piece for Concert Band.

Variations on an Austrian Folksong - Gerald Oswald

Hot off the press! Composer Gerald Oswald bases this new work on an old Austrian folksong, O du lieber Augustin! The Augustin in questions is a ballad singer and an ad lib poet who apparently wrote this folksong about himself. His grim sense of humour and his attitude towards life, that humour can get you through anything, are readily apparent in this new piece. Gerald Oswald's Variations on an Austrian Folk Song received top honours at the 2010 Austrian Composition Contest.

Manhattan Pictures - Jan Van der Roost

In this colourful composition, Jan van der Roost recreates the energetic and multi-racial city life in Manhattan, using four contrasting movements. The opening movement is rather short and rhytmical. In the second "Picture", a variety of musical entities accumulate into a coloured "sound curtain", on top of which the brass section presents a broad theme. In contrast to the two previous movements, the third movement is exremely quiet, featuring the first flute, clarinet an oboe in broad melodies. Again, the orchestration plays an essential role. Following on a majestic "tutti" (almost "movie-like....) the serenity of the very beginning reappears. Finally, the nervousness anddynamic style of the two first movements come back in an exciting apotheosis with rich and sometimes surprising instrumentation which explores the multiple possibilities of the large symphonic wind band to the full.

Concerto d'Amore - Jacob de Haan

In Concerto d'Amore, a maestoso opening is followed by a quick and energetic movement that leads to a magnificent adagio. A motif from this adagio can be heard in a swinging movement, after which the piece comes to a close with the return of the adagio. This arrangement for concert band certainly brings this beautiful music to life.

    Tarjan - Thierry Deleruyelle

Tarjan, Hungarian Pictures is a work in three movements commissioned by the town of Vesoul and its concert band. It offers not only strong musical content, but also historical insight about a beautiful region with a great tradition.
