Bulgarian Dances is a free rhapsody, divided into four distinct movements based on famous Bulgarian folk songs. These songs have a very old tradition and stem from both the antique world of Byzantium and even earlier in the ancient and mysterious civilization of the Thrace region. In the beginning they were monodic songs, then diaphonic, with characteristic dissonances of major and minor seconds which make them unique. What also makes these songs so fascinating are seductive and complex irregular rhythms. The composer, while remaining faithful to the original spirit of the songs, has not hesitated to broaden the musical ideas, enriching them and making them more suitable to the rich palette of colours of contemporary concert bands. Score & Parts. Canyons is a response to the imposing landscape of the American South West, an exploration of musical ideas. The piece falls into four main sections. Following a build-up in the brass and woodwind, there is a slowish first section with massive chords, percussive pounding and some contrapuntal development of the work's main thematic idea. This is followed by a brief scherzo and then a slow movement which again derives from chordal material and another contrapuntal development. The fourth section is an extended Allegro Vivace, dominated by a dance-like theme introduced by the trumpets and an important motif heard at the start by the brass and percussion. After the final climax, the Adagio epilogue leads the music to a quiet close, the solo piccolo restating the cornet figure heard at the opening of the work. (Grade 4.5) Duration: 15 mins. Shortly after the Second World War, a combative movement of Danish, Belgian and Dutch artists chose the cobra snake - extremely dangerous yet considered sacred - as a symbol of their resistance to strict guideliness of form. The name "Cobra" also happens to contain the first letters of the cities Copenhagen, Brussels ans Amsterdam, from where most of the movement's members came. The Cobra movement, which existed from November 1948 until November 1951, can with some justicication be called the last major avant-garde movement of the 20th century.The source of inspiration for the composition Cobra comes from four paintings: "Obhobning" by the Dane Egill Jacobsen; "La jeune fille et la mort" by the Belgian Pierre Alechinsky; "Orgeldraaier" and "Le rythme joyeux de la ville" by the Dutch artists Karel Appel and Corneille. Obhobning means "pile-up", which is represented musically in the first part by a melodic and harmonic pilling up of perfect fourth's. The first part is also characterized by a rhythmic feeling, which the painting gives through its use of numerous black stripes. In the painting La jeune fille et la mort, Pierre Alechinsky places a young girl opposite Death. The second part features the constantly pulsating motion of live while a creeping, dark, melodic line develops. The tension between life and death is tangible as a battle reveals itself. In part three, one hears the Orgeldraaier by Karel Appel, as cheerful and playful as an organ grinder's music. The painting Le rythme joyeux de la ville by Corneille is busy and extremely dynamic, a perfect source of inspiration for a powerful, rhythmic ending to this composition. 0:09:57

Concerto for Trombone Wind Band Set (Score & Parts)
Concerto for Trombone" was written especially for J?rgen van Rijen, the solo trombonist of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam. It is a composition without a story, consisting of four overlapping parts. The solo part was not written for J?rgen van Rijen technical skills, but rather for his expressive technique in the higher registers. According to Jan Bosveld, J?rgen van Rijen has additional merits that distinguish him from all other trombonists. "Concerto for Trombone" was premiered at the International Music Festival in Saas-Fee, Switzerland.The Repr?sentations Orchester des Schweizer Armeespiel, conducted by Christopher Walter, accompanied him. This composition was made financially possible by the Music Lending and Information Centre (MUI), department of the library for the province of Gelderland in Arnhem, The Netherlands. Cos?' fan tutte Wind Band Set (Score & Parts)
In 1786 Mozart composed his wonderful opera Le Nozze di Figaro (KV 492). The Italian libretto, based on the play Le mariage de Figaro by Beaumarchais, was written by Lorenzo da Ponte--who also made the libretti of Mozart's opera's Don Giovanni and Cos? fan tutte. In the opera Le Nozze di Figaro, Count Almaviva tries to seduce the fianc?e of Figaro, his valet. Eventually, through four acts full of complicated intrigue, he is outwitted. In his music, Mozart--at times in a humorous way--reflects the numerous social and erotic intrigues with both empathy and insight. The brilliant overture is just as vivacious and witty as the opera itself. Mozart delightfully anticipates the passion and playful love that is to come. The skillful transcription for concert band by Tohru Takahashi certainly does justice to this appealing music.

This composition of Marc Cunningham has four parts, and takes place on a sunny day in a picturesque town. 1. Promenade Many people walk through the city. The band passes through the streets. People are strolling along the avenues and amorous couples are sitting on a park bench. 2. Lovey Dovey One of these couples is knee-deep in love. 3. Crispy and Creamy Here the contrasts between a crisp staccato section in two-four time signature and a smooth legato section in three-four time signature are depicted. Is Crispy the boy and Creamy the girl? 4. Farewell In the last particle the couple says goodbye. We still think back to the walk through the city. It sounds a little less happy now. Not everyone is good at saying goodbye, sometimes a tear flows. 07:45

Crossroads Wind Band Set (Score & Parts)
Crossroads is an attractive concert work of four interconnected movements, written for the 23rd music festival of the Bernese Cantonal Music Association in Aarwangen, Switzerland. The work has the river Aare to thank for the title of Crossroads -- it was an important trading hub, especially until the age of road building in the 18th century. The lively introduction is followed by a beautiful waltz and a romantic middle section. In the robust finale the orchestra can really roll its sleeves up! 09:15

Dulcinea (Symphony No. 3, 'Don Quixote,' Mvt. 2)
The second of four movements in Robert W. Smith's epic work, Dulcinea tells the tale of Don Quixote's adoration of the ideal woman. Written in a sultry 5/4 tango, the audience will hear the haunting melody and feel the passion of Cervantes' knight-errant as he proclaims his love for Dulcinea de Tobosa. Featuring an English horn solo that is liberally cross-cued throughout, the initial melody gives way to the most powerful of statements before returning to the tango in a quiet, yet startling ending.

Metamorphoses (Novello Symphonic Band) Extra Score - Gregson, Edward
Extra Score only. The title of the work refers to the process of constant change that occurs in the music. The opening four note motif provides most of the intervallic and harmonic material. The work is in three main sections, the first of which alternates between pulsed and non-pulsed (or free) music; the second is a slow section with solos for flute and clarinet enhanced by electronic means, whilst the third is high-charged rhythmic music which resolves the symphonic argument.
