£107.95SPECTRUM (Prestige Concert Band Set) - Vinter, Gilbert - Newton, Rodney
Score and Parts. SPECTRUM. This work caused much consternation when it was used as the brass band test piece at the 1969 British Open Competition. The score is an uncompromising one and as colourful as its title suggests. The various episodes of the work are each named after a colour from the spectrum - Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo and Purple (changed from Violet when Vinter became conscious of his failing health). It is a piece of violent mood swings challenging all sections of the band. Many consider this to be the finest of Vinter's small output for band. Prillar has it's origin from Norwegian folklorist music. It's a way of calling and singing the cattle home from the fields. Halling is a wellknown folk dance from the valleys in the eastern part of Norway. In this work, the clarinet use the prillar to get the other musicians to join in. The melodic material in Prillar and Halling hasn't got all the sound of Norwegian folklore exclusively. You can also hear folkloric music from other nations. The idea is to show the similarities between these and also the small differences there are between folkloristic elements from a large area. The piece also contains the folk tune "Adam in paradise", from south of Norway. At the end, thetunes are stacked on top of each other, and the similarities of origin turns out. - Stig Nordhagen -

Anton Bruckner (b. 4.9.1824, Ansfelden, d. 11.10.1896, Vienna) didn't have it easy. Throughout his life, the Austrian composer was plagued by self-doubt. Anton Bruckner came from a simple, rural background. After the death of his father, he was accepted as a choirboy at the monastery of Sankt Florian in 1837. After several years as a school assistant and his own organ and piano studies, he first worked as organist in St. Florian, then from 1855 as cathedral organist in Linz. Introduced to music theory and instrumentation by Simon Sechter and Otto Kitzler, he discovered Richard Wagner as an artistic role model, whom he admired throughout his life and also visited several times in Bayreuth. In 1868 Anton Bruckner became professor of basso continuo, counterpoint and organ at the Vienna Conservatory; ten years later court organist; and in 1891 finally honorary doctor of the University of Vienna. He was considered an important organ virtuoso of his era, but had to wait a long time for recognition as a composer. It was not until Symphony No.7 in E major, composed between 1881 and 1883, with the famous Adagio written under the effects of Wagner's death, that he achieved the recognition he had hoped for, even if he was reluctant to accept it given his inclination towards scepticism and self-criticism. Anton Bruckner was a loner who did not want to follow a particular school or doctrine. He composed numerous sacred vocal works, such as his three masses, the Missa Solemnis in B flat minor (1854), the Te Deum (1881-84) and numerous motets. As a symphonic composer, he wrote a total of nine symphonies and many symphonic studies from 1863 onwards, tending to revise completed versions several times over. Bruckner's orchestral works were long considered unplayable, but in fact were merely exceptionally bold for the tonal language of their time, uniting traditions from Beethoven through Wagner to folk music, on the threshold between late Romanticism and Modernism. Hymns for four-part mixed choir a cappella (1846, St. Florian) No. 1 in E flat major (WAB 41/3): Quite Slow No. 2 in C major (WAB 41/4): Andante No. 3 in B flat major (WAB 41/1): Slow No. 4 in A flat major (WAB 41/2): Slow Hymn for five-part (SSATB) mixed choir and organ No. 5 in D major: Solemnly They are simple works, completely subordinate to their liturgical use, which nevertheless already show numerous characteristics of personal expression. These small pieces were able to stand up to the harsh scrutiny of the mature master: in 1888, Bruckner subjected them to a revision in which he made only minor corrections.Duration: 11.00

The Flood was commissioned by Music Society Maris Sonores from Biddinghuizen, the Netherlands, on the occasion of its 55th anniversary. In this colourful composition, the name of the society has been inventively woven into the music, Maris Sonores meaning sounds of the sea, by means of key clicks in the flutes and clarinets, wind effects in various brass and woodwind instruments along with timpani, as well as sound effects in the small percussion. In addition, the history of the town is also reflected musically. Many centuries ago, around the year 800, a hamlet by the name of Bidningahusum already existed; unfortunately, it fell victim to the water of the then Zuiderzee. Later, the catastrophic flood of 1170 dealt the final blow. In the 1960s, there was a call for pioneers to once more build a town carrying the name Biddinghuizen in the polder of Eastern Flevoland - and so it happened. This versatile work has been written in such a way that many bands will be able to play it. Each instrument group comes out well, so that The Flood will be a joy for players and listeners alike. Silent Night (German: Stille Nacht, heilige Nacht) is a popular Christmas carol, composed in 1818 by Franz Xaver Gruber to lyrics by Joseph Mohr in the small town of Oberndorf bei Salzburg, Austria. It was declared an intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO in 2011. Over the years, because the original manuscript had been lost, Mohr's name was forgotten and although Gruber was known to be the composer, many people assumed the melody was composed by a famous composer, and it was variously attributed to Haydn, Mozart, or Beethoven. However, a manuscript was discovered in 1995 in Mohr's handwriting and dated by researchers as c. 1820. It states that Mohr wrote the words in 1816 when he was assigned to a pilgrim church in Mariapfarr, Austria, and shows that the music was composed by Gruber in 1818. This is the earliest manuscript that exists and the only one in Mohr's handwriting. The song has been recorded by a large number of singers across many music genres. This haunting setting by David Willcocks also includes slight textual alterations to the piece that has been translated into about 140 languages. This arrangement represents one in the Series of Band Arrangements compatible with David Willcocks' Carols for Choirs.
