Themes from - Ferde Grofé / arr. Douglas E. Wagner
It is safe to say that Grof's iconic work from the early 1930s remains his most recognized and programmed creation to this day. A master of instrumental color and texture, themes from four of the five program-based movements are included in this arrangement for younger players, including "Sunrise," "On the Trail," "Sunset," and "Cloudburst." Audiences are nonetheless assured to experience the freshness, the richness, and the excitement of the original score. (4:30) This title is available in MakeMusic Cloud.

Eternal Peaks - Robert W. Smith
A stunning contest or concert work for your young band. This energy-packed original is sure to make your young band sound spectacular. Inspired by Colorado, the land of mountains, in this single flowing composition the intent listener will hear the panoramic beauty of the Colorado sunrise with the Rocky Mountains as the backdrop. The power of the dinosaurs, the menacing sheer angles of jagged rocks and the thunder of ancient drums combine to form the first movement entitled In Stone and Shadow. In contrast, Twilight seeks to capture the majestic yet delicate scenery at perhaps the most beautiful time of the day. The final movement entitled "Avalanche" brings together musical and visual imagery to the most powerful of conclusions. This title is available in MakeMusic Cloud.

Helios Rising - Todd Stalter
In Greek mythology, Helios is a Titan who faithfully drove the Sun's chariot across the sky each day, disappearing in the west into Oceanus (the ocean, which the Greeks believed encircled the Earth), and rising out of it again in the east the next morning. Helios' journey at sunrise is referenced musically by the ascending leap in the main theme and the strong driving rhythms of the low winds and percussion. The contrasting light and dark textures in the slow section depict twilight inevitably giving way to the darkness of night. (2:45)

Chautauqua - Robert W. Smith
Inspired by the westernmost county in the state of New York, this dynamic original composition has three primary sections entitled: "Sunrise on Chautauqua," "A New Dawn," and "Through the Nickelodeon." The listener is captivated by the beautiful melodies and flowing dynamic swells in the beginning section and once established, attention is divided between contemporary musical sounds and yesteryear's musical style. Day Dreams - Dana Wilson
This work was commissioned in honor of the 75th birthday of the wonderful conductor Frank Battisti. It is based entirely on the musical pitches extracted from his name (FFrAAnk BABAttisti), forming the musical motive F A B A. In order to recognize the arc of his life and career, Day Dreams traces a metaphorical day. The movement titles all come from Thoreau's ---a place very close to where Frank spent a good part of his life. The work begins with a dramatic sunrise. The second movement represents morning (or youth), and juxtaposes two extremely contrasting and seemingly irreconcilable types of material, typical of that stage of life. The third movement explores the afternoon (adulthood), a period of sophisticated balancing of life's many forces. The final movement is a sunset, with each individual player saying goodbye.

Waterdance - Carl Strommen
Picture a lake before sunrise. With Dawn, the myriad varieties of life in and about the lake slowly awaken and, in the heat of the day, skip and skate across the water as if in a frantic ballet. Thus WATERDANCE begins and continues until it experiences Evening. Here is a beautifully crafted composition that brings us into the rhythms of life, the patterns of nature and an uplifting portrayal in sound. Stunning! (4:33)

Daybreak - Carl Strommen
"Daybreak" was written as programmatic depiction of the evolution of an ordinary day, from sunrise to sunset. As our day develops, the music moves from quietly subdued to light and fanciful, then to broad and melodic, and finally to a driving, muscular, and powerfully dissonant conclusion. (4:00)
