Composed for woodwind artist Gary Foster, the "Suite for Solo Flute, Clarinet and Alto Sax" is a perfect concert showpiece for the multiple woodwind instrumentalist. The opening allegro features flute, demonstrating both technical prowess as well as a jazz-influenced lyrical theme. A return to the allegro is followed by a cadenza, then a switch to clarinet for a haunting and beautiful Lento, and a showy waltz. Concluding on alto saxophone, the soloist again demonstrates great technique as well a lyrical playing. Christmas A La Mode

Smith's Christmas A La Mode is an arrangement of "Jingle Bells" that takes the band and audience on a journey through the traditional modes. Following a brief introduction, our journey begins in the Dorian mode. We continue our sleigh ride through Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian, and Aeolian before an ominous stop in the Locrian mode. We return to Ionian as the arrangement concludes in glorious fashion. A wonderful educational opportunity combining music theory with effective performance!

2nd Sinfonietta - Oliver Waespi
"2nd Sinfonietta" was composed in 2005 for the "Musikgesellschaft Cham" and is made up of three parts, each flowing into the next. The themes presented in the first movement migrate through the work and return transformed at the end. Each part has its own colour and calls on a varied sound palette. This composition has been put together in an ingenious and thoughtful manner and is suitable for prestigious concerts or as choice piece for competitions.

Composed to embody the sense of American vigor and patriotism, this fast-paced and energetic fanfare, concert opener or contest selection features rousing brass fanfares, lively woodwind motives, and driving percussion. Using a simple motive that alternates between duple and triplet rhythms, this is a great selection to use for teaching the difference between the two. Invocation and Dance - Carl Strommen
Starting from a lovely and haunting melody introduced by the clarinets, Carl Strommen's Invocation and Dance, in two contrasting sections, is an object lesson in how to write memorably for young musicians using simple, straightforward and appealing material. The fast second section begins with some wonderful quiet percussion writing and the phrase and meter shifting versions of the original tune cleverly vary it before leading to the fully-scored return of the melody in its original form. Written with the lilt and flavor of the Scottish Highlands, this original Alan Lee Silva piece is a joyous new addition to the concert band repertoire. The pulsing 6/8 rhythms are contrasted by momentary feelings of 3/4, as the melody floats over punctuated harmonies. This piece contains contrast, with a slower middle section featuring a divine flute melody, accompanied by the sound of "bagpipe" drones in the other voices. This grand Scottishstyle melody develops to a climax before the wistful return of the main theme, and an up-tempo coda completes the piece.

Guardians of the Banner - Joseph Compello
A very nice original march from popular composer Joseph Compello, Guardians of the Banner contains many aspects of a traditional American march but with the developing student in mind. It has an extended introduction, a first strain, second strain, and a break strain followed by a return of the first strain to end the march. There is not the typical modulation to a trio section, making this march much more playable for this level of band. The march is at a more moderate march tempo and contains some really nice melodies, making it a great way to introduce this important style to younger students.
