Written for the 1952 Orange Bowl game between the North and South College Football All Stars, this march has all the elements of the mature Fillmore style: energy, brilliance and abundant, memorable tunes. In 2006 Brabant will be celebrating it's 900th anniversary. On May 13th 1106 the count Van Leuven was appointed duke of Brabant. This was the birth of the duchy of Brabant. For centuries this duchy, situated in the heart of the Netherlands, was the primary of the seventeen provinces in the Lowlands. Brabant formed with it's capital cities Brussels, Leuven, Antwerp and 's-Hertogenbosch the focal point for politics, culture and economy. The revolution against Spain (1566-1648) caused a fracture between the North and South. The old duchy was divided into a Dutch and Belgian part. Even though each had their own historical background, the bond forged in the past was partially keptalive. To this day we still have a duke of Brabant. Brabantia Aeterna takes you on a musical journey through 900 years of Brabant history. A fascinating journey portraying war and peace, love and grief, prosperity and adversity, development and deterioration. Listen to how monks chanted, bells tolled and churches were built. Or take the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries with their bustling markets, builders of cities or the bleating of countless sheep across the heather. The plague, tribulations, soldiers and political bickering in the following centuries. Hear how the industrialisation of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries provided prosperity for the region and how to this day the following saying still applies: 'the road to Brabant leads to a warmer world' Brabantia Aeterna was commissioned by the Brabantse Bond van Muziekverenigingen (Brabant Music Society) in honour of its fifth anniversary.

Folk music plays an important role in the life of the Ukrainian people. Their country covers an area of over 600.000 square kilometres and has more than fifty million inhabitants. In the north there are vast woods, in the west one finds the picturesque Carpatian mountains and valleys, and in the centre and the south Ukraine has its famous steppes with fertile black soil. The river Dnjepr divides the country in two, forming a natural frontier between the western and eastern regions, which each have their own distinctively different musical folklore. This diversity forms the musical basis for Ukrainian Rhapsody. The work consists of three movements: the first one, in a moderatetempo, without a pause flows into a slow but very expressive middle movement, resulting in a powerful climax. The composition ends with the Gopak: a rousing dance.

The composition contains small fragments of Oriental music and South American rhythms and occasionally, Russian Cossacks seem to raise their heads. The imposing rock formations formed over 200 million years ago and represent one of the most recognizable landmarks of the Dolomites and South Tyrol (I). Due to their exceptional beauty, the Dolomites with the Three Peaks are dignified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2009. The call of the Three Peaks attracts numerous visitors every year, who will experience an unforgettable and impressive spectacle of changing colours from cool grey to glowing red. This well-known work was composed in Christiania in 1874 for a burlesque Carnival in Kunstnerforeningen.An early title for the work was Bryllup paa Dovre. The manuscript score and parts at The National Library in Oslo of the early version with this title have much more music than the version printed by C.F. Peters, Leipzig in 1881. The form in this first version was ABA with an additional trio part that later were discarded. In the trio Svendsen used the melody Saeterreisen (Os har gjort kva gjeras skulle) from Lindeman's collection of Norwegian Folk Tunes. (Vol. I/115). In the A-part a wedding tune (Bruraslaatten) from Sogn is used (Lindeman Vol. I/476). The Carnival's literary theme was the connection between the cold north and the warm south. Musically the south is represented in Svendsen's music by Raffaele Sacoo's melody from 1835, Te voglio bene assai.I believe that if Norwegian quality music from this period is going to be performed, it must at least be available. There must be editions for modern instrumentations with full scores. I do this as my contribution to expand and enrich the repertoire for Concert Bands.- Stig Nordhagen
