The poignant lament Mo Chile Mear (My Gallant Hero) was authored after the defeat of the Scots and their Celtic allies at the Battle of Culloden in 1746, ending dreams of independence from English rule. Michael's emotional setting opens with a flute solo then builds gradually as layers of instrumental groups are added. The piece shifts to a lilting 6/8 style, propelled by the percussion section, and culminates in a majestic statement by the entire ensemble.

The fourth movement of Robert Buckley's grandly cinematic suite describing impressions of the seas of the moon, Serpent Sea is animated, exuberant and somewhat over-the-top. It was inspired by the idea of two huge winged serpentsrising out of the waves and frolicking together in a wild, barbaric dance. The pair do, however, show a more graceful side every once in a while - represented by an exotic theme that starts in the clarinet and flute. The author of Kosterflickornas visa "the Song of the Koster Girls" is Evert Taube (1890-1976). It is one of the 200 popular and beloved songs he wrote and which have made him one of Sweden's "national poets". His popularity and greatness is madeevident since he is honoured to be on the new 50 Kronor banknote which will be issued during 2015. The Koster islands are the most westerly inhabited part of Sweden. The islands are situated in the northern part of the county Bohusln, not far fromthe Norwegian border. The song text goes:Here is the sea that embraces our Bohusln islandsand carries our father and brother in a rocking boat.Come to the beach, come with me, come singby my sideout over Skagerack inthe calm summer night.The arrangement for flute and wind band is written by Jerker Johansson (born 1967), who is conductor of the Gteborg Wind Orchestra, which has made a CD-recording of the song with Evert Taube's son Sven-Bertilinterpreting his father's work.

Few composers have had such an impact on Swedish music life as Tor Aulin (1866 1914). He studied violin and music theory in Stockholm 1877 83, and in Berlin 1884 86. In 1887 he founded the Aulin Quartet, which for more than 20 years played animportant role in broadening Swedish interest in chamber music. The quartet was often on tour with the composer Wilhelm Stenhammar at the piano.1889 1902 Aulin was the leader of the orchestra at the Royal Opera in Stockholm.At Aulinsinstigation the Concert Association in Stockholm (later The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra) was founded in 1902, and he was its conductor until 1909. From then on he was the conductor of the Gothenburg ConcertAssociation (nowadays The GothenburgSymphony Orchestra).Besides being a first class violinist, Tor Aulin was also an accomplished pianist, and Edvard Grieg was deeply impressed by Aulin's rendering of his piano concerto.Aulins list of works is dominated by his musicfor violin. He wrote three violin concertos, the third of which still has a place in the repertoire.Four Aquarelles for violin and piano from 1899 is his most beloved composition. In 1996 Jerker Johansson arranged this work for soloinstruments, one for each of the four movements, and concert band. The solo instruments being clarinet, trumpet, flute and alto saxophone.
