An Irish Tale
Based on the folk song While History's Muse (subtitled Air: Paddy Whack), this delightful arrangement in 3/4 has all the characteristics of a lighthearted Irish dance. A tambourine and clarinet drone set the stage for the flute melody that is eventually passed throughout the ensemble. A key change to E= builds until the piece returns to the lighthearted style of the opening one last time. Great writing for young bands! (1:55)

Obviously, the music of John Williams is beyond comparison, but subconsciously one's thoughts do drift into that direction. Fanfare for the Sun is a radiant fanfare from the pen of Carl Wittrock. Nearly three minutes utmost concentration are required of your musicians to have them display stunning feats of technical brilliance. A moment of calm in this masterly composition is the vivacious and entertaining dialogue of clarinet, bassoon, oboe, and flute in the middle-section. The work was written as a commission by the Melomaan Foundation on the occasion of its anniversary. Een vergelijking met de muziek van John Williams mag uiteraard niet gelegd worden,maar onbewust gaan de gedachten wel in die richting. Fanfare for the Sun is een stralende fanfare van de hand van Carl Wittrock, die zijn voorliefde voor de filmmuziek niet onder stoelen of banken steekt. Rustpunt in deze korte doch magistrale compositie is de levendige en onderhoudende dialoog tussen klarinet, fagot, hobo en fluit in het middendeel. De componist schreef dit werk in opdracht van de Stichting Melomaan (Nederland) ter gelegenheid van haar jubileum.

While I have written the piece in g minor, I have thrown in some diminished 7 chords and added some v chords for extraordinary sounds and novelty that students (and teachers who are tired of hearing I-iv-v-I over and over) are sure to latch on to and enjoy. The ranges on all of the instruments are well within the grade level of the piece, with Trumpet 1 going as high as 4th line D (just a couple of times), flute going no higher than their "C" and Trombone hitting their high E-flat one time. "My Fantastic Gramps" is a bubbly piece about an old man.The style of playing must be fresh and youthful throughout the piece.Watch the balance in bar 12. 1st flute (piccolo) and 1st alto sax should be prominent in the balance.At bar 28 and equivalent bars, the flutes and clarinets(!) should be playing vibrato.Please make sure that trumpets play the articulation (short) excessively at bar 70 (banjo-style). Feel free for some slapstick-mood at bar 86. Be creative!The style at bar 115 must be outgoing and happy, with a lot of joyfulness!

The commission was supported by The Composers' Remuneration Fund.With the title "Fanfares and Fantasies", I try to accommodate both the extroverted (represented by fanfares and celebration), with the quiet and introverted in the small interludes I call fantasies.The solitary flute in the fantasies symbolizes something that is very far from brass fanfares, but still, I believe that by this, both the band and the music emerge with even greater depth. "Candles in Advent" is a beautiful melody with great lyrics. It was originally written for an Norwegian Advent TV-series in 1985.In this arrangement, the oboe has some solo passages (cue notes in flute). I Have tried to vary the instrumentation without going beyond the beautiful Christmas mood.The harmonization is simple and functional. Let the soloists "speak" with good phrasing and focus also on harmony in the unison melody lines. Good balance and intonation in the accompaniment can make the performance a little gem on the Christmas concert.- Reid Gilje -
