"The years leading to the US Bicentennial (1976) saw a great flowering of artistic celebration, including the commissioning of American composers to write festive works for the occasion. The Nashville Symphony and its conductor Thor Johnson asked Adolphus Hailstork for such a work to premiere, and to distribute the music at no cost to high school orchestras around the United States. The present version for band followed as a natural offshoot of the infectiously exhilarating 3-minute work. This impressive work was composed for the Dutch-Friesian city of Leeuwarden, which was considered the 'cultural capital' of Europe, 2018; the composer spent his college years in this city. This festive work for bagpipes, drums and concert band is based on the melody of the anthem of the province of Friesland. Proud was written for the music event, Grutsk, which is the Friesian word for proud hence the title. Various bands have performed on five different stages across the town centre. The finale was performed in a concert held at Wilhelminaplein (Wilhelmina Square), which opened with this work. This world premiere was conducted by the composer himself. The bagpipes areoptional, but advisable. As a whole, they give the composition a very special sound.

£134.99I Colori della Gioia - Jan van der Roost
This work for soprano and concert band was originally written for a special occasion: the wedding of one of the composer's children. It therefore matches another piece written for a similar occasion "I Shall Love But Thee". The lyrics are from the book Respiro Neve by the internationally renowned art photographer Luca Artioli who possesses poetic talent as well. The first movement is stately and serene as where the contrasting allegro is much more dynamic and cheerful, requiring the solid high register of the singer. The conclusion is festive and radiant, partly thanks to the contribution of a piccolo trumpet! This work is a wonderful addition to the bandrepertoire wanting to perform with an excellent vocal soloist!

Highdays and Holidays was commissioned by the South Berks Concert Band to celebrate its 40th anniversary in 2016. The band rehearses in the village of Mortimer, which has a long and fascinating history dating back to, and beyond, the BronzeAge. Mortimer is famous for The Mortimer Revel, an annual event which was apparently a fairly rumbustious and sometimes violent affair. Highdays and Holidays seeks to capture some of this festive event in the form of an energeticoverture, which explores a variety of moods including the somewhat chaotic atmosphere of the Revel.

In late August of 2005, the normally festive skies over the city of New Orleans began to change. As Hurricane Katrina approached the city, the skies promised a weather event of unprecedented proportions. Composer Robert W. Smith was commissioned by the United State Marine Forces Reserve Band of New Orleans to create this symphonic tone poem recreating and commemorating the Katrina experience. Beginning with "Blue Sky," the jazz of the historic city provides the musical inspiration. Soon, the "Threatening Sky" arrives giving way to the "Raging Sky." Finally, the "Dawn of a New Sky" brings hope as the city is reborn to share its musical gifts once again."Promising Skies" is large work for concert band at the medium advanced level. Using the American art form of jazz as its base along with unusual percussive effects, the piece is a unique and welcome contribution to the repertoire.
