Slow March with Celebration - Timothy Broege
Slow March takes as its structural inspiration the traditional New Orleans funeral music played by brass bands. A slow dirge is played as the funeral cortege exits from the church and begins the journey toward the cemetary, afterwhich the music becomes festive and up-tempo to send the soul off to a happier place. This powerful opening tune by the American composer Alfred reed was commissioned by the Rissho Kosei-kai Organization. The music is based on two contrasting groups of motifs.The first group consists of a number of fanfare-like figures that immediately suggest the festive character of the piece. The second group consists of the development of a long melodic line at times interrupted by the fanfare motifs of the first group. As the figures from both groups get more interwoven, the composition returns to the impressive character of the opening and gets more powerful towards the mighty conclusion.

The famous Spanish arranger, composer and conductor Juan Vicente Mas Quiles (Lliria, 1925) has laways had very close connections with the interantionally reknown symphonic band 'Banda Primitiva' (El Clarin) of his native town in the neighbourhood of Valencia. He started in the band as a young musician, he has often been a member of the council, he has constantly been guest-conductor and also very often acting-conductor and he still is the first musical advisor of this elite band. Each year the members of the society (the clarineros and clarineras) elect the 'Clarinera Mayor', the young lady presiding the group of PR ladies, dressed in national costume. It was to honour Seorita Belinda Verdeguer Garcia, Clarinera Mayor 1994-95, that Mas Quiles wrote this festive and elegant concert pasodoble.

The strong voice of Finnish national romanticism Armas Jrnefelt (1869-1958) composed his jubilant Festouverture (Festive Overture) for the official opening of the Finnish National Theatre on 9 April 1902 Robert J. This overture is written in the conventional three-part style. Extensive percussion includes anvil, slapstick, wind chimes, and crystal water glasses. The opening and closing themes are written in a spirited and festive style. The middle section explores a more contemporary setting of Thomas Hasting's hymn song, Rock of Ages, Clef for Me.
