In the four-part instrumentation, creating the possibility to play the piece with a large number of varied strengths, he successively arranged Als ich bei meinen Schafen wacht, Inmitten der Nacht, Kommet ihr Hirten, and Ihr Hirten, erwacht. The arrangement was skillfully replenished with suitable percussion instruments. All of the carols can be performed with a choir (German text). The 1958 Welsh Dances of Alun Hoddinott are short, pithy and laced with zest.
