Voyage au Centre de la Terre (Journey to the Centre of the Earth) (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Janssen, Harrie

This composition was based on the world-famous novel by the French author Jules Verne. This novel describes the attempt to reach the centre of the earth. The descent of the crater of the volcano called Snaeffels, situated in Iceland, marks the beginning of this voyage to the sublunary world. The German geologist, professor Lidenbrock, is accompanied on this trip by his nephew Axel and an Icelandic guide named Hans. The last mentioned will be helpful in many occasions.Dark colours & mist: The composer tried in this single work to give a musical expression to various significant moments from this novel. In the introduction he sketches an image of the dismal ambience on the island by using dark colors. Rising fragments of mist reveal the flanks of the monumental mountain Scataris. The composer tries to catch this image in a majestic and broad chorale.Away from Iceland: Subsequently the ostinato rhythmicity and virtuosity represent the hectic descent of the crater of the volcano. The party descends ever more and more and travels south, away from Iceland. On the way, they see all kinds of rock formations, fossils and minerals. At a depth of thirty hours walking distance, at about 150 kilometres below the surface, they reach a sub terrestrial sea which is called the Lidenbrock sea.Genuine eruption of sounds: Strange electric manifestations and unpredictable weather conditions accompany this singular phenomenon. An orchestral tutti-episode expresses this impression musically. On a make-shift raft, the party continues its voyage, heading to the south coast of this huge sea. Once ashore, an enormous rock obstructs the passage. The blowing up of this obstacle unleashes a genuine eruption of sounds in the orchestration.Spat out by the volcano: But the explosion has an unforeseen side effect. The sea - travellers and raft included - is sucked upwards into a dark hole. Again, our heroes are accompanied on their involuntary voyage, while left to fend for themselves, by an ever increasing ostinato rhythmicity. Before an eruption can destroy the raft, the threesome manages to escape and climb up through a cave towards the daylight. They seem to be spat out by the Stromboli volcano on the island of Sicily, far from home. The composition ends with triumphant sounds that represent the scientific triumph of these adventurers.Duration: 22.00

Voyage into the Blue (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Wada, Naoya

Voyage Into The Blue was commissioned by the Windbands of Mizumaki Minami Junior High School, Koyo Junior High School and Fukuma Junior High School bands performed the work in a competition. The pictorial music describes the voyage of an airplane. The introduction depicts the take-off, which is then embellished by the following section marked 'energico'. The second movement is an attractive setting of the flight itself. The slow section depicts a star-filled night sky. The close presents the landing at dawn: the flight is over. Voyage Through the Night (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Akey, Douglas

Commissioned by the Indiana Bandmasters Association, this descriptive work is built around two contrasting themes. The first is a haunting slow melody which reoccurs later in a more developed and expanded form. The fast section uses a strong theme with a creative harmonic structure along with occasional mixed meters. With Doug's skillful orchestration and colorful percussion writing this piece is an excellent choice for festivals or contests.

The voyages of the great explorers Columbus, Magellan, Cabot, and Verrazano are portrayed in "Voyage to the Edge of the World." A bold introduction leads to lyrical, yet driving themes, which depict the tension and uncertainty of the voyagers. A subtle, lyrical theme, which portrays the wonders of the new world, provides a expressive showcase for your ensemble. A powerful restatement of the opening theme leads to an intense and dramatic ending, which will thrill your audience and band alike.

Voyage with the VOC Wind Band Set (Score & Parts)

The United East India Company, or Verenigde Oostindische Compagnie (VOC) was one of the first international trading companies in the Netherlands. Voyage With The VOC follows the route of a ship (first movement) on a visit to the Rajah of Yogakarta (second movement) to load up the ship before returning home (third movement). The fourth movement describes the hard life of a sailor before the fifth movement sees the ship safely to harbour once again. 06:30

VOYAGES ON A ROWING SONG (Easy Concert Band) - Himes, William

The well-known spiritual Michael, Row the Boat Ashore is the melodic inspiration for Voyages on a Rowing Song, a brilliantly crafted theme and variations selection. Following a dreamlike introduction and presentation of the theme, three variations follow: a rollicking hoe-down , a contemplative chorale, and a commanding march. Each variation focuses on a different motif from Michael, Row the Boat Ashore, with compelling recapitulation of the original theme occurring during the conclusion of the march variation.

Vranjanka (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Hesketh, Kenneth

Vranjanka (pronounced VRAHN-yahn-kah) means "From Vranje," a town in southern Serbia. It is loosely based on the traditional folksong ano Duo. The melody is extant in two versions, one in 7/8 and one in 3/4. The musical form of the piece starts with a fairly slow introductory section, a faster second section cast in a set of variations on the folksong. Vranjanka was commissioned by Timothy and Hilary Reynish in memory of their son William. Duration: 9.00

Vulcan (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Daugherty, Michael

Vulcan for Concert Band is Grammy award winning composer Michael Daugherty's first work for the high school and intermediate level college band. The work is a colorful homage to Gene Roddenberry's interstellar universe as depicted in the classic American television series Star Trek (1966-69). The title refers to the fiery planet Vulcan, home world of half-human, half-Vulcan Mr. Spock. As the rational-minded science officer aboard the starship Enterprise (commanded by the hot-blooded Captain James T. Kirk), Mr. Spock grapples with the "fascinating" predicament of making decisions predicated on human emotion versus Vulcan logic. Daugherty has composed stirring, yet highly structured music that alludes to the Vulcan "Pon Farr" ritual, Vulcan telepathic mind-melds, and the volcanic planet itself. At the the Ann Arbor, Michigan world premiere (utilizing the combined forces of the Pioneer, Huron and Skyline High School bands), Vulcan was an immediate hit and will surely become one of Daugherty's most performed works.
