Opening with the percussion section in a stately style, the main theme is first heard in a chorale-like setting. Designed as an extended fanfare, the piece quickly builds in intensity with each subsequent phrase, and culminates in a fast-paced and brilliant sounding ending flourish. Will Ye No' Come Band Again?' is the common name given to the poem "Bonnie Charlie" by Carolina Oliphant (Lady Nairne). The Poem is about the end of the Jacobite rising of 1745, which culminated in the battle of Culloden. The poem was later set to a traditional Scottish folk tune, and is commonly used as a song of farewell.
