There are seven contrasting variations that will provide much interest to the player as well as the listener, the seventh of which is a fugato which leads into a triumphant finale where the theme is heard for the first time in its completion. This, we feel, will be a significant work for Wind Band as it has been for the brass band movement.

Variations on a Celtic Tune (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Oare, Michael

The poignant lament "Mo Chile Mear" (My Gallant Hero) was authored after the defeat of the Scots and their Celtic allies at the Battle of Culloden in 1746, ending dreams of independence from English rule. Michael's emotional setting opens with a flute solo then builds gradually as layers of instrumental groups are added. The piece shifts to a lilting 6/8 style, propelled by the percussion section, and culminates in a majestic statement by the entire ensemble.

Variations on a Civil War Tune (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Story, Michael

This traditional tune, "The Cumberland's Crew," was inspired by the historic gunship battle between the wooden Cumberland and the ironclad Virginia in 1862. The light and airy melody in 3/4 time develops a variety of textures and voicings and builds to a dramatic conclusion. Variations on a Fourth was written for an innovative project initiated by the Siena Wind Orchestra from Tokyo. Four European and four Japanese composers created a new wind orchestra piece for a special concert held on 15 June 2019 in Bunkyo Civic Concert Hall, where all eight works - that were recorded for a CD release the previous day - were performed. Variations on a Fourth comprises four variations, all of which feature the musical interval of a fourth in much of their melodic and harmonic material. The result is a four-movement work of wide-ranging appeal that will be an absolute joy to play! Duration: 8.00

The variation form is one of the oldest and most fundamental forms of musical technique. Franco Cesarini has chosen the well known French folk melody, Sur le pont d'Avignon as the basis for this piece. The piece begins with a short introduction followed by the exposition and ten lively and contrasting variations. The final reminder of the main theme also included references to the famous French nursery songs J'ai du bon tabac and Alouette, which bring the work to an expressive and brilliant close.Duration7:00

Variations on a Nautical Hymn (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Williams, Mark

Based on the Naval Hymn, "Eternal Father, Strong to Save," this work opens with an aggressive fanfare which leads to the hymn, stated in a chorale fashion. The first variant is Allegro and features interplay between rhythmic figures in the percussion section with mirrored polychords in the woodwinds. The second variant is reminiscent of the music of Erik Satie and features a beautiful pairing of flute and oboe solos supported by strong countermelodies played by the horns. A third variant in 6/8 provides another interesting point of view before the work closes in Maestoso fashion. Another Mark Williams masterpiece! Duration: 6.15
