The opera-ballet Mlada was an epic project involving six different Russian composers including Mussorgsky, Borodin and Rimsky-Korsakov. Unfortunately the work didn't ever receive a performance however the festive march assumed a life of its own in an orchestration by Rimsky-Korsakov. This has remained one of Mussorgsky's lesser known works however it has been given a new lease of life with this fine arrangement for concert band. Duration: 5.15

There is a saying that "the test of great music is that it stands the test of time." While there have been many triumphal marches written by great composers, few are as well-known as this powerful and exuberant march from Act II of Giuseppe Verdi's 1871 grand opera, Aida. This arrangement is orchestrated to showcase the richness and capabilities of the contemporary wind band and is based on the early 20th Century setting by the famous Italian bandmaster and composer Giuseppe Creatore. Here is a very unique piece that the band will really enjoy working up. With changing meters, frequent syncopations and smooth melodic and harmonic transitions from minor to major modes, there remains a smooth flow to the entire piece. The melody moves easily from section to section climaxing with a very effective contrapuntal presentation prior to the dynamic conclusion. This vivacious and tuneful overture was written for Rob Wiffin's friends in the Chiltern Concert Band. One of the tunes is actually based on the rhythm of the names of some of the stalwart members who were in the band when Rob Wiffin conducted it in the early 1990s and are still there now.In compositional terms this piece is in the light vein of Chase the Sun and High Spirits, featuring a fanfare opening that reappears towards the end, a slow middle section and a number of bright melodies, mostly built around the interval of a third.Duration: 7.20
