Pulcinella (Euphonium Solo with Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Sparke, Philip

Pulcinella was commissioned by the Taiwanese euphonium player Tzu-Hsiang Lin. Lin is a renowned soloist and teacher and a Besson Euphonium Artist. He teaches euphonium at Taipei National University of the Arts, National Taiwan University of Arts, Shih Chien University and National Kaohsiung Normal University. Lin gave the premiere of Pulcinella in both its concert band and brass band versions in January 2021. Pulcinella continues Sparke's series of euphonium solos named after characters of the Italian commedia dell'arte and opens with a long and expressive minor melody for the soloist over a brooding accompaniment. This is taken up briefly by the full band and is extended by the soloist after a change of key. A cadenza, accompanied by fragments of the main melody leads to a complete change of mood, tempo and tonality, introducing a Vivo section starting with a perky syncopated tune for the soloist. The band then uses elements of this new tune to introduce a change of key, where the soloist introduces a more lyrical second subject over a pulsing accompaniment. The band then takes this up and changes key to reintroduce the original Vivo melody, which leads to a short and acrobatic coda to bring the work to a spectacular close. Duration: 6.45

Pulsation (A "Groove" for "Grove") (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Saucedo, Richard L.

Written entirely in one tempo, but with the meter alternating between 4/4 and 6/8 throughout, Richard Saucedo creates an ingenious effect of pulsating motion along with layers of textures and sounds. Starting with a soloistic dialogue between flute and clarinet the work progresses to thicker sonorities and percussive effects including clapping and shouting. Definitely an enjoyable work that is off the beaten path!Duration: 2:45

Pulse is a solo work for baritone or euphonium and concert band. As the title suggests, this piece is very rhythmic in nature. Pulse represents life and vitality, which also characterises the work. The tempo remains virtually constant throughout the piece. Even during the cadenza, played by the baritone, the pulse of the timpani continues to beat steadily. This work is dedicated to the young soloist Felix Geroldinger of upper Austria.

Punch & Judy Wind Band Set (Score & Parts)

Iedereen, kind of ouder, kent (nog) wel het gevoel van het bijwonen van een poppenkast voorstelling. Of de hoofdpersonen nu Kaspar en Grete (Duitsland) of Pulcinella (Itali?) heten, Petrushka (Rusland) of Jan Klaassen en Katrijn (Nederland), er doen zich altijd humoristische, spannende en hilarische taferelen voor. De oerpersonage is Pulcinella, waarin het woord 'pulcino' (kuikentje) te herkennen is. Hij heeft dan ook een snavelvormige neus, een hanige tred en een kwakende stem. In Engeland heten de hoofdpersonen Punch and Judy. Punch stapt onbekommerd door het leven maar vindt samen met zijn Judy spanning en verdriet op zijn pad. De kwakende stem van Punch is duidelijk te horen door het gebruik van de 'kazoo'. Hun leven kent verrassende wendingen. Dat is te horen in een 'slapstick'-achtig gedeelte aan het slot, van deze voor alle leeftijden geschikte voorstelling. 04:15

The total spectrum of band color appears in this brilliant composition by the master of this band medium. A beautiful lyric section is surrounded by flashing woodwinds and punctuating brass and percussion in the outer sections. Beautifully cross-cued, but still requires good instrumentation and capable players. Exceptional closing number!

For many, Lancastrian William Rimmer is Britain's 'March King.' His marches are wonderful, every one with its own unique personality and form. Like Sousa, he also created and played a vast catalogue of band music ranging from waltzes and solos to great selections from the masters, but it is for his marches that he is remembered today. Pulcinella, often called Punchinello or Punch in English, is a classic character with a long nose which originated in the 17th century Italian Commedia dell arte.
