Galop - Amilcare Ponchielli

La Gioconda, with a libretto by Arrigo Boito, is the most successful theatrical work by Amilcare Ponchielli (1844-1886). In this work there are two dance pieces: the Furlana at the conclusion of the 1st act and the Danza delle ore in the 3rd act. The Dance of the Hours has a precise choreographic outline: it is a masked ball which includes the "hours" of dawn, day, evening and night successively, and ends with a wild finale of galop. The latter is a sort of fast polka, in binary rhythm and unbridled pace. A French variant of it is the can-can. The finale in galop time of the Dance of the Hours recalls certain playful dances by the composer Jacques Offenbach, such as the famous Can-can that concludes the overture of the operetta Orphe au enfers.

As the title implies, this composition is an exciting ride at the speed of a horse in full stride. Using a wide range of instrumental colors and with rhythmic intensity throughout, the journey is a smooth one for the most part, with only a few dark tunnels fraught with impending peril along the way. Dynamic and entertaining.

Galop - Gary P. Gilroy

A fast, furious yet very playable work meant to conclude concerts in a fun and lighthearted manner. While it sounds impressive and quite demanding, appropriate ranges and wise orchestration make it quite playable at faster tempos. As with most of Gilroys compositions, the percussion section plays an important role as indicated by a galloping rhythm first introduced by a solo woodblock. This fun and energetic work will provide a musical exclamation point to any wind band performance.

In contrast, the ballet Copplia, premiered in 1870 with music by Lo Delibes and choreography by Arthur Saint-Lon, tells the happily-ever-after story of the toymaker Dr. Copplius, his life-sized doll, and two young lovers.

Galop From Genevieve De Brabant - Jacques Offenbach

Jacques Offenbach was a product of the Paris Conservatory, becoming a professional cellist. However, today he is best known as the composer of light opera, including Ballet Parisien, La Belle Helene, and Orpheus in the Underworld. This "Galop" is a spirited and light-hearted work containing the origins of what we know today as the Marines Hymn. This scoring by John Bourgeois is sure to become a standard.
