Flight is a programmatic work that is divided into six short segments, each describing a different aspect of a young pilot's experience in the sky. The motor can be heard starting up. The plane finally takes off and an exciting musical journey gets underway. Breath-taking views, scary turbulence, and finally a full-fledged storm are all part of the view from above. Fortunately all goes well. Special musical effects, such as the sound of the propeller, add a sense of realism to this Flight.

Flight - Brian Balmages

Premiered at Carnegie Hall, this minimalistic fanfare celebrates SpaceShipOne, the first privately manned spacecraft to exceed an altitude of 62 miles twice within two weeks. The three sections explore the launch to space, reaching the apogee (weightlessness), and the return to the atmosphere. Punctuated by incredible brass fanfares and woodwind flourishes, the entire work is a bundle of energy from start to finish, and is the perfect opener for any concert. Monumental! (4:21)
