Right from the beginning, this dynamic overture explodes with intensity and rhythmic drive. Commissioned by District 8 of the Michigan State Band and Orchestra Association, John Moss uses angular melodies and biting ensemble punctuations to provide grit and character to this tour de force for wind band. For contrast, a slow middle section features rich harmonies and sonorous melodies before a reprise of the opening dynamic themes. A high-energy rhythmical work that uses meter changes, syncopation, dotted quarter notes, and tied rhythms to create excitement. Great use of unison scoring reinforces the rhythms and adds great power to the sound. Other effects such as horn rips and handclaps add an extra layer of color. Flat Out and Wide Open - Barry E. Kopetz

Here is a natural extension of the composers experience of rebuilding and driving a classic Mustang. This driving piece can be viewed as a series of "gear shifts" as you race across a straight, flat stretch of highway. Opening with the rev of the engine, the piece quickly moves into high gear for the remainder of the work, built on short, punctuated, intense motivic ideas. These short snippets propel the music forward as though accelerating wildly with an impending sense of loss of control. A real burst of powerful V-8 musical fun.
