Second Time Around is a stirring, melodic 4/4 (or common time) march for young bands in which everyone except the percussion has the melody at one time or another. This work provides young players with the opportunity to perform a march which is not technically difficult, but is very satisfying.

Second to None - Philip Sparke

Second to None is a perfectly suitable title for this work, though it actually refers to "Nulli Secundus", the motto of the British Corps of Army Music, who gave the commission to Philip Sparke. The piece opens with a fanfare, followed by two short quotes from two of the Corp's own marches and a festive Vivace. A more legato central section creates a nice contrast before the work closes with the opening fanfare. A perfect affair!

In boxing, the term seconds out refers to the moment when coaches and trainers (or seconds) must be out of the ring, leaving the competitors alone to face the competition. In a similar vein, this composition provides a musicaldescription of the challenges and triumphs of students as they transition from middle to high school, leaving their seconds (parents, mentors, etc.) behind to face life on their own terms. Featuring a strong sense of urgencythroughout, Seconds Out is solidly written for inexperienced ensembles with plenty of tutti scoring, and interspersed with sections of contrasting dynamics and effective percussion writing.
