Seatbelts Fastened! - Jan Van der Roost

Right from the outset until the very end, the speed, energy and "drive" of the tuneful music is palpable. It's abundantly clear why the title "Seatbelts Fastened!" was chosen: just like an airplane, this music takes off and neither tempo nor intensity are lost throughout the flight. Descending and ascending scales characterise the most important thematic material and the music explores a variety of different registers through Van der Roost utilising a great deal of different tonalities and metres. Second Connecticut Regiment - D. D. Reeves

David W. Reeves (1838-1900) was a skilled cornet soloist and band leader. He was called the "Father of Band Music in the U.S.A." He wrote over 150 marches, galops and polkas. In 1981, The Second Connecticut Regiment was named one of the three "most worthy marches" by Col. William Santelmann, Director of the United States Marine Band. This new edition, by another former conductor of the Marine Band, brings the work up to the standards of his former bands library.

Second Essay - Samuel Barber

Composed in 1942, Barber's Second Essay is a masterwork of concentrated musical drama, with a richness of texture comprised of highly charged and succinctly organised musical modules. The opening theme has adefinite American flavour, which is followed by a fugal section that evolves from simple tonal patterns to polytonality. After an intensely rhythmic third section, all elements are combined in a huge climax and coda that round offthe work. Expertly transcribed for symphonic band by Dr. George Schneider, this is certain to find its place in the standard repertoire for mature ensembles. Duration 11:00. (Grade 5)

Along with his First Suite in E-flat, Holst's Second Suite is among the most treasured landmark works for band. In this adaptation, Robert Longfield has adjusted the extreme ranges, used the instrumentation of the contemporary young concert band, and added liberal cues (particularly for oboe, bassoon, and horn).
