Rite of Passage - Brian Balmages

A beginning band piece limited to a 6-note range, Rite of Passage will have your band playing together in very little time. Utilizing smaller chamber sections as well as the full band, this is an excellent teaching piece. With no clarinets over the break and no trumpets higher than a written A, this is a very easy Grade 1 concert march.

Ritmico - James Barnes

Ritmico is a dynamic contest style overture that joins florid melodic writing with a pulsing percussion and driving bass lines. Cast in ABA form, the main vivace theme gives way to a lyrical cantabile middle section, eventually leading towards a recapitulation of the main theme. In this final section, the melody and accompaniment figures return with an energetic counterpoint woven in, building towards an exciting and dramatic finish to the piece. This is an ideal closer or opener, perfectly suited for medium to advanced ensembles. (Grade 4)

Ritual, a work for large concert band, describes the atmosphere during a pagan ceremonial offering. The tension of the approaching ritual, softly supported by a mysterious percussion accompaniment, slowly builds and leads to an enticing dance. This precedes the height of the ritual, the pagan sacrifice. Following the sacrifice the peace seems to be restored until suddenly a surprising final turn ends Ritual.
