Morning Song features the horn quartet mostly in a soloistic role - indeed there is an accompanied cadenza towards the end of the piece - but there are moments where the horns assume their conventional concert band role as harmonic support or playing the counter melody. This expressive composition shows all the versatility of the horn quartet and gives them the chance to be in the spotlight.

Morning Star - David Maslanka

Morning Star was commissioned by the conductor of the Grand Ledge, Michigan High School Wind Symphony, Michael Kaufman, to celebrate the opening of the school's new concert hall. It was premiered by the students in May of 1997. Morning Star is a happy piece about beginnings: the dawning of a new day, the opening of a new hall, the beginning of adult life for the young people who premiered the piece, and for those who are playing it now.

Morning Star - James Proctor Harding

The Englishman, Bishop Reginald Heber (1783?1826), wrote Brightestand Best of the Sons of the Morning for Epiphany. These lyrics werepublished in 1811, in the Christian Observer, but were set to music andissued in hymnal books only after Heber?s death, by English composerand organist James Proctor Harding. This attractive arrangement byHenk Hogestein will give every Christmas concert a certain elan.

Morning Star Variations - Bert Appermont

This composition is based on the beautiful chorale melody Wie schn leuchtet der Morgenstern (How beautifully the morning star shines). Like the chorale fantasias by Bach and Buxtehude, this is a fantasia in which the original theme is usedand altered throughout the work in various ways. Slow passages are alternated with fast ones, and finally a grand tutti arrives in which the original chorale theme sounds joyfully in a majestic finale. For extra colour and dimension, an optionalorgan part has been added, that can be used when the circumstances are appropriate. On the full score, the various organ entries are indicated.
