The result is Lights Out, an audience-wowing excursion into a new realm of opto-electro-acoustic wind band repertoire that incorporates visual and physical elements into an exhilarating piece. The music itself is stunning, but for the full effect you'll want to devise a performance that plunges the audience into darkness and suddenly surrounds them with glowing colors of LEDs and glowsticks. A very physical approach to connecting band music to life - and to light! To perform the piece, you'll need an audio system capable of playing the prerecorded audio tracks from a laptop computer via a small digital audio interface connected to an audio mixer. The young have the future. This is the statement made at the beginning of 'Like a Child' by Andreas Ludwig Schulte. The opening radiates strength and ambition, but one is also made to wonder which direction will be chosen, which choices will have to be made.After the introduction the first steps on the path of life are taken, still somewhat unsteadily (the 3/4th time used illustrates this uncertainty). However, the child has now set off and will meet the future with an open mind, unafraid, even though experience will teach it how easily it can be hurt.Fortunately, it is sometimes allowed to be vulnerable and it discovers there will always be someone to offer shelter,support and love. (Adagio) The last part breathes a far greater independence. Youth is able to face the future, it can even take on the whole world!

Like a Mighty Stream - Johnnie Vinson

Composed in remembrance of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the title of this dramatic setting is taken from a biblical passage and quoted by Dr. King in his celebrated I Have a Dream speech in 1963. After a fanfare-like introduction, the piece is comprised of three sections. The Dream relects on Dr. King's famous speech. This is followed by Strife, which recalls the violence of the civil rights movement, and finally Hope, which looks to a brighter future and is a setting of the hymn We Shall Overcome. Performed with or without the narration, this is a stirring work for young bands. Dur: 5:20
