In Ireland's quest for independence, the Easter Rising of 1916 was a pivotal event that helped shape history and fan the flames of Irish freedom. Here is a sparkling medley of tunes from Ireland's rebellious past. The familiar Minstrel Boy leads to a lively setting of Wind That Shakes the Barley. The haunting, yet dramatic Foggy Dew then leads to the stirring march strains of The Boys of Wexford which features tin whistles (opt. flutes or piccolo) along with a driving rhythmic pulse. As its title suggests this composition is a musical evocation of Ireland. The original themes of this work are strongly influenced by traditional Irish folk music. Each of the three movements reflects part of the Irish character. Following a solemn introduction the first movement springs into life showing the cheery side of the Irish character. The second movement is a ballad with a simple, natural and peaceful melody that inspires a feeling of fullness.The final movement introduces a lively Irish dance in 6/8 time. This joyous piece is a must for your concert band repertoire.

Irish Tune from County Derry

It has been called the "Irish National Anthem," and has been adopted as a favorite tune by millions beyond the shores of that country. It also has served as the theme song for entertainers, and appeared in soundtracks on television and in motion pictures. Irish Tune From County Derry - Grainger

Percy Grainger's "Irish Tune from County Derry" is unquestionably one of the most beloved standards of the concert band repertoire. Rob Romeyn's brilliant arrangement for the Command series of this iconic work has been skillfully and carefully adapted to better fit the instrumentation of a smaller ensemble, thus allowing the piece to be performed effectively by many more bands who would otherwise not have the opportunity. All of Grainger's iconic melodic and harmonic lines and harmonic structure are present and left intact. We predict this wonderful arrangement will become a classic and will be a valuable addition to the repertoire for many years to come. Great music for younger performers!
