The Conquest

Set in Concert Bb and utilizing a 4/4 time signature, The Conquest utilizes beginning band concepts to depict a lion trying to find his home in the forest. The piece is written with a limited range to help ensemble players find success in shaping their individual lines as they experience and, conversely, narrate this short adventure through their playing!

The Corcoran Cadets March

Written in 1890, this early Sousa march is a great exercise in rhythmic precision and dynamic contrast. Rearranged and technically adjusted for the modern concert band from the original Carl Fischer publication, this march really flies!

The Courageous Nine

Scored for either a large group or a group with limited instrumentation, The Courageous Nine was written in recognition of nine students from North Central High School Band in Lebeau, Louisiana who attended the Louisiana Music Educators Association District Three Assessment. This stately march in B-flat major is sure to prove inspirational to beginning bands!

The Cyclops

For first-year band students, this work is based on the beastly, one-eyed mythological giant. Frightful and exciting, this composition allows ensembles to learn marcato articulation, accents, tempo control and balance between sections. Use this to develop interdisciplinary lessons studying Greek mythology. Your young musicians will look forward to playing this in concert.

The Dark Crusader - Donald Josuweit

This is the perfect song for teaching 6/8 time. It is all very easy with eighth notes in groups of 3 only. No quarter/eighth rhythms, so it is easy to get the students to feel the triple meter. It is also a great song for getting the first clarinet players to play over the break. For the 1st half of the song, they play low notes. From low A, they press the register key and get the E in the staff, thus making it easy and fun to play the higher notes. It is an exciting work and one of NMP's best sellers. The first trumpet's highest note is C.

The Diamond Baton - Roger Cichy

Written in 6/8 time, it is an overture with a majestic march feel. Your audience will be toe tapping and will have a feeling of overwhelming pride.1st trumpet's highest note is Ab. All clarinets cross the break.

The Directorate

Written by John Philip Sousa in appreciation of an honor awarded him by the Board of Directors of the 1893 St. Louis Exposition, The Directorate was one of the first pieces Sousa composed for his newly formed Sousa Band. Featuring lively wind parts, contrasting dynamics, interesting harmonic twists in the trio, and a rousing final strain, this march is ideal for teaching the classic march style. Rescored for the contemporary concert band's instrumentation from Sousa's original Carl Fischer composition, this march is now ready to be discovered by a new generation of performers.

With a nod toward Western movie theme songs, The Elven Eleven is a quirky look at a troop of pony-riding elves on a quest for adventure.
