Shadow of the Sphinx

Shadow of the Sphinx transports listeners to ancient Egypt, where the relentless labor of workers who built monuments in the desert was marked by exhaustion and pride. The music evokes the vastness of the desert and the mysterious grandeur of the Great Sphinx. The piece uses light percussion to mimic the movement of camels and slow, deliberate melodies to reflect the weariness of the workers. Attention to precision and balance between the instruments will help recreate the mystical, ancient atmosphere.

Shadows

Written in memory of a prominent band director who touched the lives of so many, Shadows is an extremely emotional and passionate piece by composer Scott Boerma. It demonstrates Scott's heartfelt thoughts of admiration and sincerity through this gorgeous piece of music. We are proud to offer such a contemplative work and to have him in the Carl Fischer Music catalog for the first time. We hope to offer more of Scott's beautiful music in the near future.

Shenandoah - Larry McKenna

Here is a different sound for the traditional American folksong. Larry McKenna, a great jazz musician, wrote this work with jazz harmonies in jazz ballad style. It is easy to play and Larry knows how to make great voice leadings so it is easy to go from one note to another. 1st clarinets cross the break. 1st trumpet's highest note is C#.

Band conductors know of this famous folk song because of the popular setting by band composing icon Percy Grainger, but it has been out of reach for young bands... until now! Andrew Balent has arranged the delightful tune in a setting that works wonderfully for young band.

Inspired by Mark Twain's poem "Warm Summer Sun", Shine Kindly Here evokes the beauty of nature as sunlight dances across the water. The piece begins with delicate mallet figures, representing the play of light on the sea, and gradually builds in intensity with shifting rhythms and soaring melodies that reflect the natural beauty of the composer's surroundings. The work culminates in a dramatic conclusion, offering an uplifting experience through its intricate harmonies and flowing lines.

Shout for Joy All the Earth! is a bold fantasia for the advancing concert band based on the composer's choral work of the same name. This work celebrates being alive and captures moments of intense joy and relaxed contemplation. The overall mood of this piece emphasizes the feeling that when we are overcome by joy we feel as if all of nature is celebrating with us.
