Scrimshaw Tales

Scrimshaw is the technique of whalebone and ivory carving that was started by sailors centuries ago. Inspired by the composer's stay in Utqiagvik, Alaska, this composition musically illustrates scenes from these carvings thatdepict a day of Alaskan fishing. Starting broadly and majestically, the music quickly moves to a lively and energetic section that features syncopation and introduces the concept of canonic entrances. A return to the initial thematic material brings the piece to an excitingconclusion. Although challenging in many ways, this composition fully rewards all performers and listeners with a thrilling musical journey.

Secret Mission

Inspired by spies and superheroes, both serious and humorous, this cinematic depiction of a spy on a mission to defeat a nefarious villain will entertain both students and audiences. An accessible melody, driving percussion parts, generous doubling of essential parts and limited ranges, will let you teach important musical concepts while engaging student interest. A sure winner for concert, contest or festival performances.

Semper Fidelis

Semper Gratus

Serenata

Suitable for performance after one year of instruction, this Latin-flavored dance is an excellent study in independent playing for young bands. With steady percussion, bass staccato articulations, clarinet and horn ostinatos, and muted trumpets, there are many teaching moments presented. A contrasting middle section lets your band focus on smooth articulations and alternating melodic lines. Program this for a lighter moment in your concert that also helps students learn important musical concepts.

Sesenta

Sesenta was composed to celebrate the 60 years of leadership by Dr. Guy Foreman with the Michigan City Municipal Band. The piece opens with an exciting and energetic theme, with the tempo staying brisk throughout. The dynamic shifts and rhythmic patterns reflect both the celebratory nature of the anniversary and the progression of time. Solos from soprano saxophone, flute, and euphonium add color to the piece, while the final fanfare-like coda provides a majestic conclusion.

Setting Sail

With its title is taken from the text of Walt Whitman's poem "Leaves of Grass," Setting Sail is an epic new piece that is expansive and sophisticated. Its luxuriant, reticent opening moves into beautiful lyrical lines and all-encompassing harmonies before leading into the journey at sea, punctuated with a cool 6/8 groove. To finish, we have a climactic return of the original lyrical material. This is a large-scale work of dramatic proportions.

Seven Summits

The Seven Summits are the highest mountains of each of the seven continents. Using the concept of the summits, this piece explores the rush of adrenaline, the pounding of the heart, and the sheer joy of being one with nature. The middle slower section represents the pitfalls and difficulties of climbing the mountains, demonstrated by the several accidentals and mature chordal progressions. Finally, the end brings the climber's triumphant return to base camp! 1st trumpet's highest note is G.
