Remembering

"Remembering" was premiered on May 18, 2023 and written in loving memory of three students who attended J.J. Pearce High School (Richardson, Texas), and one teacher, all who passed away tragically. The composition is played in a legato, reflective manner, encouraging soloists to interpret their lines expressively.Throughout the piece, careful balance and listening will bring out the open intervals, and develop essential listening skills in the performers.

Remembering Pearl Harbor

Written to commemorate the 80th Anniversary of the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor, this stirring tribute honors those who fought on December 7, 1941. Beginning with chimes signifying the hour of the attack, the composition takes the listeners and performers on a moving journey from the precarious moments before the attack, through the air strike and resulting aftermath. Including statements of "Anchors Aweigh", "Taps", "Eternal Father, Strong to Save", and fragments of many other tunes, this composition demonstrates the resilience of all mankind.

Remembrance

Written in remembrance of what it took for every individual to be where they are today, this contemporary composition will mean different things to different people but brings us all together under the theme of remembrance. This tender contemporary reflection develops nuanced phrasing and listening skills with varied dynamics, phrasing and contrasting levels of harmony, dissonance, peace and tension. Sounding more difficult than it is, use this as a contrast to concert openers and to introduce contemporary literature to your students and audiences.

The music of Susato has long been a staple in band music, as it is some of the first examples of music for consorts of instruments. Band directors have long embraced his music to teach the Renaissance style. With Renaissance Dance, Bill Calhoun has delivered the easiest possible arrangement of this famous Susato piece taking care to retain the original style and teachability.

Written in response to adversity in its many forms, this concert or contest composition for advanced bands celebrates the spirit of rising above. Adversity is represented by various harmonic and rhythmic devices throughout the work and is resolved through creative reworkings of previous melodic material, different textural instrumental combinations and tempo and dynamic shadings. Truly a commentary on not only life's struggles but the fact that strife also causes positive growth, this complex, yet approachable, composition will challenge your musicians both musically and emotionally.
