Of Metal and Magic

Inspired by Norse mythology, this piece depicts the creation of Odin's spear, Gungnir, forged by the dwarf Dvalin. The music captures the meticulous work of the blacksmiths, with percussion and woodwind instruments tapping on music stands and using metal sounds to mimic the forging process. The steady tempo and unified articulation emphasize the deliberate crafting of the mythical weapon.

Ogopogo

Okefenokee: Land of Trembling Earth

Named Land of the Trembling Earth because the peat bog, which floats on water, moves when walked upon, the Okefenokee Swamp is a natural wonder. Starting mysteriously with a full-band sound, moving through a middle section with a flute or recorder solo that depicts the life of the early inhabitants, and ending with a spirited dance that features woodwind runs, brass countermelodies and thunderous timpani and bass drum parts, this unique composition offers performers the chance to perform a programmatic work that will challenge and entertain at the same time.

Old St. Nicholas Had a Farm

Imagine if you could see the North Pole, where Santa keeps all of his reindeer. Someone, whether Santa himself or the elves in his employ, has to keep them fed, warm, and happy if they are to do the impossible again in a year's time. Old St. Nicholas Had a Farm has some fun with this idea by mashing up the classic song "Old MacDonald" with popular Christmas carols. Using only the first six notes of the Bb scale and only two repeated eighth notes as the most challenging rhythm, students will feel comfortable playing the sound of sleigh bells, the crack of Santa's whip, and the thunder of reindeer hoofs. This piece will make a perfect addition to your next holiday concert and audiences will delight in participating.

Omicron is an exciting composition for the very beginning band that starts with a three-note idea and steadily builds as the piece progresses. Carefully placed accents make the simple theme float across the bar lines throughout the piece. Sean O'Loughlin has a knack for writing great music for the very youngest of students.

. A true transcription of this beautiful Romantic Era work by one of the Russian Mighty Five composers. It is not complicated and the ranges are mostly in the Grade 3 category. But the 6 1/2 minute work with the key for the last half of the work going to 3 sharps concert pitch makes it a grade 4.
