This medley of traditional folk songs songs uses Clair Fairchild's "Twelve Persian Folk Songs" as its basis. Fairchild took care to preserve their original authenticity by limiting all western harmony and as a result, performers will be required to replicate the songlike phrasing of the lines, rhythmic integrity and the style of the accompaniment. Essential to performance of this composition is helping performers understand that many inflections exist beyond what is written on the page. Musical challenges abound in this well-crafted folk song based composition.

Call of the Ancient Clans

This piece takes players back to ancient times, when neighboring tribes would communicate by way of rhythm instruments. With an interesting, pulsating rhythm and catchy woodwind lines, the engaging music gives students the opportunity to create fun musical moments. Notes generally fall within the first year range, but also provide a good challenge with first clarinets going over the break a few times. Dynamic contrasts, interesting percussion parts, and many exciting moments offer an exciting concert finale.

Call to Duty

Callisto

A winning and moderately easy concert piece that takes its name from one of the moons of Jupiter, Callisto is a vibrantly scored set of two variations on a fragment of a theme from the Jupiter movement of Gustav Holst's orchestral suite, The Planets. The characteristic flatted-7th of much English folk music is retained in both the quick opening section and the slow, reflective variation that forms the B section of this clever and appealing overture-style piece.

Camelia City March

Written to celebrate the "Camelia City" (Quitman, Georgia), this traditional style march is written in the style of Henry Fillmore. Starting with a light, happy woodwind melody with simple flourishes in the low brass, the march then moves through dynamic changes before a trio that features low clarinets and euphonium with a unique woodblock percussion accompaniment. Ending with a return to brass flourishes, this classic march is perfect for learning the traditional musical form.
