Call of the Ancient Clans

This piece takes players back to ancient times, when neighboring tribes would communicate by way of rhythm instruments. With an interesting, pulsating rhythm and catchy woodwind lines, the engaging music gives students the opportunity to create fun musical moments. Notes generally fall within the first year range, but also provide a good challenge with first clarinets going over the break a few times. Dynamic contrasts, interesting percussion parts, and many exciting moments offer an exciting concert finale.

Camelia City March

Written to celebrate the "Camelia City" (Quitman, Georgia), this traditional style march is written in the style of Henry Fillmore. Starting with a light, happy woodwind melody with simple flourishes in the low brass, the march then moves through dynamic changes before a trio that features low clarinets and euphonium with a unique woodblock percussion accompaniment. Ending with a return to brass flourishes, this classic march is perfect for learning the traditional musical form.

Canonic Fantasy - Bill Calhoun

As the title implies, Canonic Fantasy is based on a harmonic canon that forms the basis for this excellent new concert band work. It begins slowly and dramatically and then weaves into a bold and dynamic allegro. Canticle of the Sun

A piece with a lyrical chorale and a hymn-like quality, Canticle of the Sun is written in a free flowing style, which is a different approach from this composer. The middle section is based on quintal harmony and contrasts the full sonority of the more open lyrical main theme.

Canzona

Peter Mennin was on the composition faculty at Juilliard for ten years, later returning to the school as its president for an unmatched 21 years. A lifetime composer with a sizable catalog of works which defy easy classification, Mennin wrote only one piece for concert band, the Canzona. From the Program Notes -- "Canzona is a short, brisk work, which opens with a declamatory idea expressed in massed sonorities. Next, a broad melodic line is introduced and supported by powerful rhythmic figurations. This is followed by a cantabile section. These materials are developed and expanded, and the piece closes with the opening statements brought back in a more dramatic presentation." Newly engraved and thoroughly edited for the first time.
