The horn is often associated with hunting. Hunters in earlier times used horns to signal their hounds during the hunt. In this piece the roles have been switched, and the horn is the one being hunted. The soloist has to escape the hunting low brass and gunshots of the band. The piece was originally composed for horn player Mats Pettersen and The Bergen Philharmonic Youth Orchestra in 2013, and was transcribed for horn player Bartosz Wawruch and Bergen Symphonic Band to be performed at the Brass Wind Festival in Bergen in 2017.

£183.20Viking Saga - Ray Farr
"Viking Saga" was inspired by my conducting engagements in Norway in the 1980s. Among them was a visit to the Flekkefjord Pike Korps who asked me to write a piece for them. I had just written "Adventures in Brass" which was very popular, particularly with younger bands, so I decided to pursue the creative energy. My teacher, at that time, was Professor Edward Gregson who encouraged me to develop my ideas into a full-scale work. The piece received a few performances in this version but neither I, nor my teacher, were satisfied so the manuscripts lay dormant. In the summer of 2002 a band from Switzerland- Cordula Brass Baden and Christoph Moor, who had played the piece under mydirection in the Swiss National Youth Band, commissioned me to finish the work and make the changes that, I felt, were needed. In 2016 the Tnsberg Wind Band, from Norway, commissioned a wind band version for their performance in the Norwegian Championships held in Trondheim 2017.

"Invincible" by Eugene Magalif is a reconstruction of a concert march originally composed by Konstantin Georgiadi, a prisoner from Stalin's GULAG camps. Following approximately two decades in the camps, Georgiadi became a teacher at a music college in Zaporizhia, Ukraine, although following his death, his archives were destroyed. Composer Eugene Magalif's father had met Georgiadi in a GULAG. Occasionally, during Eugene's youth, his father played this march for him, and this reconstruction consists of memories of particular phrases from the piece.

Composed in funk-rock style, and is based on the groove beat with which it opens. Famed bandmaster Arthur Delamont always programmed a hymn in his concerts and Memento is an homage to that proud tradition. Starting with a simple and reverent solo trumpet and introducing other brass instruments one by one, the introduction has the sound of a brass band. The woodwinds join in and, with the use of rich textures and dynamic scoring, the work builds to a powerful climax and then resolves once again with the solo trumpet. Ideal for festival use, Memento will give your ensemble an opportunity to explore expression and nuance. The second movement of A Tribute to Arthur Delamont, Memento was commissioned by the West Vancouver Youth Band.
