£186.20Symphonie de Paris - Serge Lancen
This composition, written in 1973, was commissioned by the French Ministry of Cultural Affairs and is dedicated to Dsir Dondeyne who premiered it with the 'Musique des Gardiens de la Paix' at the Paris 'Palais des Congrs' on 27 February 1975. The piece was recorded in 1994 by the 'Orchestre d'Harmonie de la Police Nationale' (National Police Band) conducted by Pierre Bigot. Serge Lancen included the following text with the score: 'The Symphonie de Paris is a musical walk through the capital. Once the visitor has arrived, the composition evokes successively: the familiar cheerfulness of the popular quarters, the hustle and bustle of the great boulevards, the mysterious elegance of the Champs Elyses, the poetic charm of the banks of the river Seine, the impressive Notre-Dame cathedral looking in the mirror of the Seine. Then we have the 'Rive Gauche' (Left bank): the young and dynamic 'Latin Quarter', 'Saint-Germain-des-Prs' an ideal place to stroll. The walk ends near the Eiffel Tower and during the ascension we really discover Paris with its monuments, its avenues, the meanders of the Seine. Finally we enjoy the unique sight of the entire city perspective.'

It was his charming wife Raphale, a fine harpist, who drew Serge Lancen's attention to the harp. He has written various works for this instrument, such as: 'Pour Raphale', 'Duo Concertant' for harp and flute, 'Crpuscule' for two harps, 'Concerto Champtre' for solo harp and chamber orchestra, and many pieces in a lighter vein for harp quintet and this Harp Concerto. The initial cadenza was inspired by Camille Saint-Sans Second Piano Concerto a work which Serge Lancen studied as a young boy. The Harp Concerto can be played with a symphonic band, a string orchestra or the piano.This work, dedicated to his wife, was premiered in July 1990 during the First Le Havre International Wind Band Festival , by Marie-Pierre Cochereau and the Le Havre Municipal Symphonic Band, conducted by Philippe Langlet.

The script for Ballet Dreams: A young ballerina is dancing for some time already in a ballet company. She is part of the Corps de Ballet but still hopes for better. When the company studies a new ballet she is granted a small solo part. This will be the fulfillment of a long cherished dream.On the day of the premiere she goes to the theatre in the early morning. As the solo performance is so near she feels very nervous and wonders whether everything will be all right that night. She starts making exercises with the orther girls. When the dancers leave she continues to exercise by herself and tries out her solo part. She does not do well and feels very tired. She sits down on a bench in the corner of the ballet room and thinks she needs some rest; so she lies down and falls asleep.She dreams she is standing in the ballet room, trying to rehearse her solo dance performance. But she does not succeed to dance as she wants and she gets more and more nervous. Suddenly she makes a wrong movement and falls down; her ankle is bruised and so she cannot dance at all.She is desperate and quite lonely because her dream goes up in smoke. She is now surrounded by a group of doctors, who examine her ankle, put on a bandage and tell her to rest. When the doctors disappear a gang of little devils come into the ballet room; they tease our poor dancer and threaten her with little arrows, while they keep dancing and stamping. The ballerina tries to get rid of the little monsters, but in vain. This looks like a real nightmare!All of a sudden the devils and the pain disappear. She tries to get up and awakes little by little. She now realizes it was only a bad dream. She feels relieved and goes to the dressing room in order to dress for the premiere performance. Her solo performance in the finale of the ballet is a real big success. Her most precious dream has been fulfilled, in spite of or thanks to the nightmare.

In the morning she bustles round the boutiques, the afternoon is spent lazing on the beach, and in the evening she lets off steam at an exclusive night club.

After the overwhelming success of his 'Second Symphony' Pjotr Tschaikowsky (Votkinsk 1840 - Saint-Petersburg 1893) got a request of the Imperial Theatre in Moscow early in 1873 to compose the stage music to the play 'Snegourotchka' (translated as 'The Snow Maiden', 'Snow White' or 'Snowflakes') which was to be written by Alexander Ostrovski, the greatest Russian playwright of that period. The wage of 350 rubles was particularly welcome to the young composer who completed the work in only three weeks time (between the middle of March and the 6th of April) before Ostrovsky finished his libretto. The first performance was given at the Moscow Bolshoi Theatre on 23rd May, 1873 was very successful and since then the work remained on the Russian orchestral repertoire as a concert suite. The suite consists of 19 parts that incorporate twelve authentic Russian folksongs. The 'Dance of the Jesters' (sometimes called 'Dance of the Buffoons') is number 13 and appears in Act 3 as part of the carnival music; it suggests the joyful atmosphere of popular festivals.
