Songs of Old Kentucky - Brant Karrick

The Kentucky mountaineers have preserved a proud heritage of traditional ballads and other old Scottish and English folk songs brought to America by their ancestors. Borrowing from this wonderful genre of folk songs, this outstanding setting of "John Riley," "The Lonesome Scenes of Winter," "Sourwood Mountain," "Frog Went-a-Courting," and "Loving Hannah" is destined to become a band classic. Skillfully scored and imaginative in setting, Songs of Old Kentucky provides a charming vehicle for expressive playing. A delightful addition to your next concert! The Wind in the Willows - Johan de Meij

"A book for those who keep the spirit of youth alive in them; of life, sunshine, running water, woodlands, dusty roads, winter firesides" said author Kenneth Grahame (1859-1932) about his children's book The Wind in the Willows. Initially, he wrote the stories about Ratty, Mole, Badger and Toad to read to his visually handicapped son Alistair, but after the publication in book form in 1908, it became a worldwide success. It was later also turned into a film and a television series. What appealed ti the composer most is the friendly, very cosy atmosphere that Grahame has managed to create with his optimistic narrative style full of high spirits, an atmosphere that reminds thecomposer of his own carefree youth. It was therefore a great pleasure to set this book to music! The four movements successively describe:I) The River- The river, which flows through the habitat of the animals like a lifeline, regularly is the scene of pleasant boat trips and picnics. The animals lead their untroubled lives here. The four-tone main motif [A-C-D-C] is extensively presented by the brass section, and returns in the following movements as a countermelody. II) Ratty and Mole -The bright, energetic Rat and the melancholy doubter Mole are inseparable friends and have many adventures. Their opposite characters are illustrated by separate musical themes. III) Mister Toad - The wilful, haughty Mister Toad is indeed a unique case: time after time, he runs into tricky situations, and with his indomitable passion for fast - preferably stolen - cars he causes quite a lot of damage...IV) The Return of UlyssesAfter Toad Hall, the majestic residence of Mister Toad, is recovered from the weasels and stoats of the Wild Wood, who had captured the estate in a cowardly way, our friends get ready for a banquet. They celebrate the victory with a triumphant parade, and so both the book and the music conclude with a happy ending.

Adventure Tale of Neverland - Daisuke Shimizu

Commissioned by the Rave Group Int'l and Hong Kong Band Directors' Association for the 7th Winter Band Festival 2015, this piece was completed in August of the same year. Ten years before I wrote "Adventure Tale of Professor Alex"(Brain/Bravo Music), setting the exploits of this imaginary character to music. From the same series now comes "Adventure Tale of Neverland" depicting fantasy adventures of the famed Peter Pan.The piece begins quietly with sound of the Great Bell of Big Ben, after which the main theme is introduced. As with the preceding work, please enjoy imagining Peter Pan's adventures to produce a spectacular musical voyage.

    Machu Picchu - Satoshi Yagisawa

Commissioned for the Ensemble Liberte Wind Orchestra, Kawaguchi City, 30th Anniversary ConcertExplaining the significance of Machu Picchu begins with remembering the Incan empire at its zenith, and its tragic encounter with the Spanish conquistadors. The great 16th century empire that unified most of Andean South America had as its capital the golden city of Cuzco. Irresistible to Francisco Pizarro, while stripping the city of massive quantities of gold, in 1533 he also destroyed Cuzco's Sun Temple, shrine of the founding deity of the Incan civilization. While that act symbolized the end of the great empire, 378 years later an archeologist from Yale University, Hiram Bingham, rediscovered "Machu Picchu", a glorious mountaintop Incan city that had escaped the attention of the invaders. At the central high point of the city stands its most important shrine, the Intihuatana, or "hitching post of the sun", a column of stone rising from a block of granite the size of a grand piano, where a priest would "tie the sun to the stone" at winter solstice to insure its seasonal return. Finding the last remaining Sun Temple of a great city inspired the belief that perhaps the royal lineage stole away to this holy place during Pizarro's conquest. After considering these remarkable ideas I wished to musically describe that magnificent citadel and trace some of the mysteries sealed in Machu Picchu's past. Three principal ideas dominate the piece: 1) the shimmering golden city of Cuzco set in the dramatic scenery of the Andes, 2) the destructiveness of violent invasion, and 3) the re-emergence of Incan glory as the City in the Sky again reached for the sun.(Satoshi Yagisawa)

Spring Song - Jan de Haan

Spring has finally arrived. The days grow longer, birds prepare to nest, trees turn green and plants begin to bloom as nature wakes up from her winter sleep. This, and the fact that the composer's third grandson was born in the spring, were the inspiration for Spring Song.

Anyone who watched the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympics heard his work, whether they knew it or not, as he composed the music for the opening ceremony. Stand Alone is an emotional song written for a Japanese TV-series, recorded by none other than Sarah Brightman. (She even sung in Japanese!) Christmas With Beethoven - Amy Adam

Here's a memorable and humorous contrast for your winter concert. A gregarious student or staff member in the guise of Beethoven returned suddenly appears on your concert stage in this comedy skit for band. The music begins as an innocent Christmas medley, but by the time it's over, Beethoven owns your band, and you, the director, are vanquished from the stage. Of course there are lots of laughs along the way.
