Starlight Memories - Darren W. Jenkins
Starlight Memories was commissioned by and written for the Olathe Civic Band in Olathe, Kansas. It was dedicated to the memory of Ed Badsky, who resurrected the group from a 50 year absence in the mid 1980's. Mr. Badsky was a pillar of the Olathe Band community. He was instrumental in starting Olathe's Band program from its beginnings in the 1960's to what is now a thriving and vibrant program that a proud and supportive community enjoys. Mr. Badsky was also a prominent jazz saxophonist who performed in the Kansas City area on a regular basis during his career. The work itself is meant to reflect and celebrate this man's life and accomplishments. It contains two short alto saxophone solos and its harmonies are "jazz" influenced. The work's title is based upon a local theater at which Mr. Badsky frequently performed.

Stay Cool - Vince Gassi
If COOL is what you're looking for, YOU JUST FOUND IT! A simple, yet effective descending line in the lower voices of the band decides to "hang out" with a very hip melodic "hook" offered by the upper affiliates. Reverse rolls for the bridge, add in some harmony in 4ths, and the result is a level of cool your band and audiences will not soon forget. Everyone has something to say in this partnership in the study of cool. All you can say at the end of this one is Du-u-ude!!

London Bridge
London Bridge was originally written for brass quintet and later scored for concert band. Below is the composer recalling the quintet version's premiere. London Bridge was designed to appeal to children, but also to the child remaining in the rest of us. It kind of developed asit went along and ended up where it is today if that makes any sense at all. A few days after the first draft was finished I took it to a clinic for high school band members at one of theAnchorage schools. The clinic was put on by the Canadian Brass who were in Anchorage on a concert tour. They sight read it at the clinic. I even asked them to autograph the parts. They did. I did not have the nerve to ask them what they thought about it, and they offered meno opinion. That may have been good. This is a terrific novelty piece that shows off the whole band, quotes famous pieces and allows the students to really have fun.

An Early English Christmas
Two lovely English carols are paired together to create a very mature sounding arrangement for young players. After a brief introduction the flute section plays "What Child is This?" with a light accompaniment. The full ensemble soon enters for a rich rendition of this classic carol. "The Coventry Carol" is then presented by the flutes and clarinets in 3/4 meter before shifting to a more dramatic 4/4 maestoso for full band. Correlated with , page 12. This title is available in MakeMusic Cloud.

In Dreams - Ryan Meeboer
is a musical representation of exactly what our dreams are like: peaceful, calming, horrific and unpredictable; yet, there is always something to remember about them when we wake up. This piece reflects that by manipulating a memorable eighth note motif through various styles, feels, tempos and instrumentation. This is a great piece for young musicians and has a slightly different feel with its use of harmony.

The Call to Adventure - David Marlatt
Adventures come in many forms---whether it be a Greek, Persian or Indian, etc. hero heading off on a mission or a sailor embarking on a dangerous trip across uncharted waters, the call to adventure is what gets it all started. This piece is heroic and noble with many "characters" found along the way. Each section represents a new person, foe, or obstacle that the hero must face. As an ensemble, you could discuss which section could represent which of these characters.

The Pirate's March - Kevin Kaisershot
"The Pirate's March" by Kevin Kaisershot was written as a dual characterization of what most people think of when speaking about pirates. The first section represents the blood-thirsty nature of this character, roaming the high seas in search of treasure or other ships to plunder. The second section is more of a happy-go-lucky character dancing on the deck of his ship with a bottle of rum in one hand and a three-cornered hat in the other. Argh!
