Written by British composer George Butterworth in 1913, this classic work is based on two folk songs - The Banks of Green Willow and Green Bushes (the latter also appearing in works by Grainger and Vaughan Williams). Butterworthdied in World War I at the age of 31, and this composition remains his most popular, regarded as an anthem for Unknown Soldiers. The haunting melody of this traditional tune likely dates to the Middle Ages, and was published by British composer Ralph Vaughan Williams in the 1906 English Hymnal. Freely adapted by Johnnie Vinson in this setting for youngbands, the minor melody is stated first by low clarinets and horns. The next section introduces an original theme, which is then combined with the first melody in the moving final section. Beautifully paced and scored largely inchoral fashion, this is a wonderfully fresh and unique offering for holiday or winter concerts.

Jig - Gustav Holst
Together with his good friend Ralph Vaughan Williams, Gustav Holst had a strong liking for the abundant folk music of the British Isles. This influence is heard in many of his works and is perhaps strongest in his Second Suite for Military Band and in the Saint Paul Suite for string orchestra. This work was composed in 1913 for the school orchestra of St. Paul's Girls School in London, where Holst was the Director of Music. The suite opens with this exuberant Jig, a dance originating from Scottish and Irish folk music in alternating duple and triple time (6/8 and 9/8), which has been expertly arranged for concert band.
