England's Pleasant Land (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Williams, Vaughan - Horton, Peter

It is a rare privilege for me to be able to present a first publication of such a prominent musical giant in our history. I am grateful to The Vaughan Williams Charitable Trust, Oxford University Press and Dr. Peter Horton for their part in making this possible. Extensive program notes describe the foundation of this piece and are included with the score. - Paul Noble

Prelude and Fugue in C Minor (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Williams, Vaughan - Noble, Paul

Written in 1920-21, the Prelude and Fugue in C Minor was published in 1930, appearing both as an orchestral work and as an organ piece. The ritornello-form first movement calls to mind the Prelude and Fugue in C minor, BWV546 of J S Bach. The fugue is in A-B-A form and based on a subject whose pentatonic outline seems like an augury of gentle pastoralism; but both movements display a gritty, truculent brand of counterpoint that anticipates the dissonance and fury of Vaughan Williams's Symphony No 4 in F minor, the composition of which spanned the years 1931-4. (from notes by Relf Clark, 2009). The power and drama of this piece is captured in this faithful arrangement for Concert Band.

Linden Lea (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Vaughan Williams, Ralph - Wagner, Douglas E.

The first published composition of Vaughan Williams in 1902 was a setting for voice and piano of a poem by William Barnes. The lyrical folk song quality of the tune makes it an irresistible choice for this arrangement for the beginning concert band idiom. Set in three-four time, the lush arrangement reinforces musicality and the triple meter concept. This setting will certainly make your beginners sound lush and polished.Duration: 2:15

Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Vaughan Williams, Ralph - Bocook, Jay

This piece combines the simple, elegant thematic material of the Elizabethan church composer Tallis, expanded and modernised through the luxurious harmonies of Vaughan Williams. A setting for band has been long overdue, and Jay Bocook does a masterful job of transforming the original work for string orchestra into a magnificent setting for winds. Fantasia was used with great effect in the film Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World.Duration: 3.45

SEA SONGS (Young Band) - Vaughan Williams, Ralph - Longfield, Robert

Originally the fourth movement of Vaughan Williams' well-known English Folk Song Suite, this setting of folk songs is now considered a separate work on its own. Including Princess Royal, Admiral Benbow and Portsmouth, all the original charm and character of the original has been authentically preserved in this outstanding setting by Robert Longfield.

Silent Noon - Vaughan Williams, Ralph - Huckeby, Ed

Originally written by Vaughan Williams as a vocal setting of a sonnet by Dante Gabriel Rossini, this beautiful art song makes a dramatic musical statement through it flowing melodic lines and creative harmonies. Ed Huckeby has transformed this classic into a magnificent work for concert band, with colorful scoring featuring the woodwind choir as well as vulnerable, yet very playable, melodic lines in the horns and trumpets. "Silent Noon" is destined to become a new standard in the portfolio of great bands around the world.

Whither Must I Wander? - Vaughan Williams, Ralph - Swearingen, James

Following his incredible success with "Divinum Mysterium," composer James Swearingen has created another powerful and expressive setting of a wonderful classic from the past. This time he has selected the music of Ralph Vaughan Williams as his source of inspiration. A written description fails to do justice to this well-crafted work of musical reverence. The music speaks for itself! This has our highest recommendation!
