Sine Nomine (For All the Saints) (Concert Band with Optional Choir - Score and Parts) - Williams, Vaughan - Noble, Paul

For All the Saints was written as a processional hymn by the Anglican Bishop of Wakefield, William Walsham How. The setting by Vaughan Williams was included in The English Hymnal which was published in 1906 for the Church of England by Oxford University Press. The music editor was composer and music historian Ralph Vaughan Williams. This hymnal used his new setting which he called Sine Nomine (literally, without name) in reference to its use on the Feast of All Saints, 1 November (or the first Sunday in November, All Saints Sunday). It has been described as one of the finest hymn tunes of the 20th century. This arrangement adheres in form to the original RVW orchestration, including all eight verses and an optional organ part, which is the standard format in many hymnals. It may be performed as accompaniment to a congregational hymn, with choir, or as a band piece alone.

Toward the Unknown Region (Choir with Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Williams, Vaughan - Noble, Paul

This magnificent setting of Walt Whitman's poem established Vaughan Williams's reputation as one of the leading composers of the twentieth century. The idea of a spiritual journey - the passage of the soul from darkness to light, Toward the Unknown Region - is central to the text and fully reflected in the music. Beginning softly and simply, the music follows the text of the poem, building through a Wagnerian chromaticism toward a bold and dramatic climax. This was Vaughan Williams's first major choral piece, and its obvious inspirational qualities made it a success from the first. This arrangement for Concert Band and Chorus adheres to the original orchestration. The choral parts are included in the conductor's score as a reference, but are not part of the set. The choral parts are available for purchase seperately.

Prelude and Fugue in C Minor (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Williams, Vaughan - Noble, Paul

Written in 1920-21, the Prelude and Fugue in C Minor was published in 1930, appearing both as an orchestral work and as an organ piece. The ritornello-form first movement calls to mind the Prelude and Fugue in C minor, BWV546 of J S Bach. The fugue is in A-B-A form and based on a subject whose pentatonic outline seems like an augury of gentle pastoralism; but both movements display a gritty, truculent brand of counterpoint that anticipates the dissonance and fury of Vaughan Williams's Symphony No 4 in F minor, the composition of which spanned the years 1931-4. (from notes by Relf Clark, 2009). The power and drama of this piece is captured in this faithful arrangement for Concert Band.

Linden Lea (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Vaughan Williams, Ralph - Wagner, Douglas E.

The first published composition of Vaughan Williams in 1902 was a setting for voice and piano of a poem by William Barnes. The lyrical folk song quality of the tune makes it an irresistible choice for this arrangement for the beginning concert band idiom. Set in three-four time, the lush arrangement reinforces musicality and the triple meter concept. This setting will certainly make your beginners sound lush and polished.Duration: 2:15
