The innovative Spanish composer Ferrer Ferranhas taken Greek mythology as an inspiration forhis concerto for trumpet and concert band. Hydra,the water monster decapitated by Hercules andIolaus, terrorised the area of Lerna, near Argos.The concerto is in three sections which contrastwith each other. Adding to the minuscule number of Klezmer pieces for concert band, Nonantum Bulgar is the 20th piece published in the BandQuest series. The title, Nonantum Bulgar, refers to Nonantum, a district in Newton which is home to the city's oldest synagogue (on the National Register of Historic Places), and bulgar (pronounced 'bull-ghar'), a type of Klezmer dance. When writing the piece, the composer imagined the dedication of the Adams St. Shul, which took place over one hundred years ago and featured a prominent Boston cantor and choir and a klezmer orchestra leading a Grand March down Adams St. This upbeat work is fun to play, features a trumpet solo, and gives every instrument the opportunity to play the melody. The series was started as a response to feedback from music educators that there is a pressing need for new, fresh band music. This scintillating work was written as a tribute to the jazz musicians of the New Orleans, Dixieland and Chicago styles of the 20s and 30s. It consists of an opening swing section in true Dixieland style, followed by a sleazy blues section. Ideally the band should be divided so there is a separate Dixieland band consisting of trumpet, clarinet, alto or tenor saxophone, trombone, banjo (optional) and tuba or double bass. Although the Dixieland band are mostly accompanied by the remainder of the concert band the accompanying players also get the chance to shine as every now and again they take over the musical themes.

Few composers have had such an impact on Swedish music life as Tor Aulin (1866 1914). He studied violin and music theory in Stockholm 1877 83, and in Berlin 1884 86. In 1887 he founded the Aulin Quartet, which for more than 20 years played animportant role in broadening Swedish interest in chamber music. The quartet was often on tour with the composer Wilhelm Stenhammar at the piano.1889 1902 Aulin was the leader of the orchestra at the Royal Opera in Stockholm.At Aulinsinstigation the Concert Association in Stockholm (later The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra) was founded in 1902, and he was its conductor until 1909. From then on he was the conductor of the Gothenburg ConcertAssociation (nowadays The GothenburgSymphony Orchestra).Besides being a first class violinist, Tor Aulin was also an accomplished pianist, and Edvard Grieg was deeply impressed by Aulin's rendering of his piano concerto.Aulins list of works is dominated by his musicfor violin. He wrote three violin concertos, the third of which still has a place in the repertoire.Four Aquarelles for violin and piano from 1899 is his most beloved composition.
