This segues into the next theme, which features George Roots's stirring Battle Cry of Freedom. Flutes and drums are widely used to convey a strong feeling of patriotism. Engelberg Variations was composed for the Hibriten High School Band in Lenoir, North Carolina and is based on the hymn, "When In Our Music God Is Glorified." It opens with a flourish of activity from the brass and percussion. This gives way to the statement of the theme set in a lovely woodwind chorale featuring flutes and oboes. A lyrical trumpet solo takes the band to a soaring tutti statement of the theme which gets interrupted by a percussion-filled staccato variation. Fragments of the theme are then heard in fun variations juxtaposed against the original theme in augmentation. Engelberg Variations is destined to become a classic! Duration: 6.45

In La Cittadella, Kees Vlak reflects the stark contrasts in the Italian mountain village Assisi. On the one hand there is the bustle of the hundreds of thousands visitors who have come to admire the beautiful San Francesco Basilica. On the otherhand within the city walls there is La Cittadella, a complex of buildings where severely handicapped people are taken care of by sisters. The dissonant main theme in the solo trumpet depicts the isolation of these people. Still, the loving care of the sisters provides some light in the darkness. Murray was greatly loved and respected in the wind and brass band world, was a fine trumpeter and teacher, and was universally known as "Man of Music".Celebration attempts to capture facets of Murray's personality. The Rondo's theme has a witty rhythmic twist to it, the Valse Triste features a solo trumpet, and the concluding March contrasts a Prokofievian theme with a slower "big tune" that attempts to match the stature of the man.The first performance took place on 12th July 2002 in Chesterfield with the Derbyshire City & County Youth Wind Bands, conducted by the composer.Duration 15 minutes

Composed by Edvard Grieg in 1875, music from Peer Gynt was originally incidental music for Henrik Ibsen's five-act play. The beautiful "Solveig's Song" is from the second orchestral suite later extracted by Grieg. Johnnie's tender setting opens with a lyric theme scored for the trumpet section. A brief andante section features the woodwinds before returning to the opening melody this time richly scored for full band. A beautiful work for teaching lyric style playing.
