Saint-Saens wrote his Grand Zoological Fantasy - "The Carnival of the Animals" - in 1186. It was first performed at a Shrove Tuesday concert in that year with the composer as one of the performers. Subsequently, Saint-Saens allowed it to be performed only on a few occasions and under special conditions. Later he forbade it to be performed at all, but this restriction was lifted under a special provision in his will.

Harlequin is the most popular of the comic servant characters from the Italian commedia dell'arte who, although a slow thinker, was acrobatic and nimble - he would never perform a simple action when the addition of a cartwheel or backflip would spice up the movement! The characteristics are aptly portrayed musically in Bruce Broughton's mini concert overture. Originally published for brass band in 1984, this revised version for wind band conveys all the hustle, bustle, and agility of the character in a finely crafted musical structure. Jazzimut (Concert Band - Score and Parts)
In 2009, one year after its formation, the Swiss brass ensemble Azimuts Brass commissioned its conductor, Marc Jeanbourquin, to write them a signature tune. He composed Jazzimut, which features a festive introduction followed by a lyrical theme. After a few bars of rock rhythm, Jazzimut goes disco and finishes with a recapitulation of the introduction as a fanfare. George Gershwin (1898-1937) was known as a songwriter, but was interested in writing larger works. In 1922 he was commissioned to write a concerto for piano and orchestra. Rhapsody in Blue is one of his most famous works. This arrangement for band, without piano, is not a recreation of the original, but rather an exploration of many of the themes found in this composition. Clarinets all cross the break, and the 1st trumpet's highest note is G.
