When John Gay assembles the music for The Beggar's Opera in 1727, he used popular tunes of the day and Dr. Pepusch provided orchestral accompaniments. More recently, Frederic Austin and Benjamin Britten have been amongst many composers who have adapted these melodies to their own purposes. Duration: 15 mins. The Robber Knight Wind Band Set (Score & Parts)
In the year 1368 a rapacious character takes up residence in the castle of Rijnesteyn at Cothen. He is Johan,bastard son of the Bishop of Utrecht.Round this now so peaceful castle eventful matters are enacted. In part one Johan and Willem Gulik of Guelders set out to do battle against King Charles of France. On their return,in part two, Johan captures two French goldsmiths in Hainault and incarcerates them at Castle Rijnesteyn. Part three is a musical representation of a courtly ballet in medieval style. The final part relates how Jan van Rijnesteyn goes to war against Hendrik van Vianen and Lord of 'Goy,Viscount of Utrecht.Jan loots his possessions and threathens to conquer all. In het jaar 1368 betrekt een roofzuchtig heerschap het kasteel Reijnestein te Cothen.Het is Johan, de bastaardzoon van de Utrechtse bisschop. Rond dit nu zo vredig gelegen ridderslot hebben zich toen geruchtmakende taferelen afgespeeld. In het eerste deel trekt Johan met Willem Gullik, de hertog van Gelre, ten strijde tegen koning Karel van Frankrijk. De terugreis speelt zich af in het tweede deel. Tijdens deze reis neemt Johan in Henegouwen twee Franse goudsmeden gevangen en sluit ze op in de kerker van slot Rijnesteyn. Deel 3 is de muzikale weergave van een hoofs ballet in middeleeuwse stijl. In het laatste deel wordt verteld hoe Jan van Rijnesteyn in 1396 ten strijde trekt tegen Hendrik van Vianen en de heer van't Goy, burggraaf van Utrecht. Jan plundert diens goederen en dreigt diens bezittingen te veroveren. 12:00

X-mas for Three Wind Band Set (Score & Parts)
David Well composed 'X-mas for Three' for three young pupils of his, who wished to give a Christmas concert. He arranged six well-known Christmas songs for them, and their first performance was a great success. This was reason for the composer to adapt the piece for 'orchestra' by adding percussion. The title has stayed the same, and the work can still be played by as few as three musicians, but as the saying goes: "The more, the merrier"! 'X-mas for Three' consists of the following parts : 1. Sweden On Guard is part of Widkvist's earliest march production. It was composed around 1914 when he served in the engineering troops.It is worth noting that the march from the beginning was probably intended for a small sized brass band and was later rearranged for a full military band by the composer. When I searched in the Swedish War Archives many years ago, looking for more or less forgotten marches, this work, among others, appeared. I immediately became attached to the young Widkvist's catchy melodies and clear harmonic tonal language that express faith in the future and optimism.Sweden On Guard has never been published in print before, and the work of modernizing the setting without resorting to the elegance and resilience of the original has been a challenge.- Niclas BlixtDuration: 2.30

Finn McCool (Fionn mac Cumhaill) was a mythical Irish giant. There are many stories associated with Finn, including the legend that he built the Giant's Causeway in the north of Ireland as stepping-stones to Scotland. Finn McCool starts as a funky Irish jig with an infectious groove and a call and response structure. This develops into a section with a melody reminiscent of an Irish air. Finally, these two melodies are played together and the music builds to a final flourish.

Resonemus Laudibus is a 14th-century carol which was widely known in medieval Europe, and is still performed today. David Willcocks' arrangement brings a modern excitement to the piece, which would not have been out of place all those centuries ago. The Latin text is translated: 1. Resonemus laudibus cum jocunditatibus ecclesiam fidelibus. Let us make the church resound with the joyful praises of the faithful. Apparuit quem genuit Maria He whom Mary bore has appeared. 2. Deus fecit hominem ad suam imaginem et similitudinem. God made man in his own image and likeness. 3. Deus fecit omnia caelum, terram, maria cunctaque nascentia. God made all things, heaven, earth, the seas and all creation. 4. Ergo nostra concio in chordis et organo benedicat Domino. Therefore let our congregation praise God with strings and organ. 5. Et Deo qui venias donat et laetitias nos eidem gratias. And to God, who gives favours and happiness, we give thanks. This arrangement represents one in the Series of Band Arrangements compatible with David Willcocks' Carols for Choirs.
