Sweden On Guard is part of Widkvist's earliest march production. It was composed around 1914 when he served in the engineering troops.It is worth noting that the march from the beginning was probably intended for a small sized brass band and was later rearranged for a full military band by the composer. When I searched in the Swedish War Archives many years ago, looking for more or less forgotten marches, this work, among others, appeared. Finn McCool (Fionn mac Cumhaill) was a mythical Irish giant. There are many stories associated with Finn, including the legend that he built the Giant's Causeway in the north of Ireland as stepping-stones to Scotland. Finn McCool starts as a funky Irish jig with an infectious groove and a call and response structure. This develops into a section with a melody reminiscent of an Irish air. Finally, these two melodies are played together and the music builds to a final flourish.

David Willcocks' arrangement brings a modern excitement to the piece, which would not have been out of place all those centuries ago. The Latin text is translated: 1. Resonemus laudibus cum jocunditatibus ecclesiam fidelibus. Let us make the church resound with the joyful praises of the faithful. Apparuit quem genuit Maria He whom Mary bore has appeared. 2. Deus fecit hominem ad suam imaginem et similitudinem. God made man in his own image and likeness. 3. Deus fecit omnia caelum, terram, maria cunctaque nascentia. God made all things, heaven, earth, the seas and all creation. 4. Ergo nostra concio in chordis et organo benedicat Domino. Therefore let our congregation praise God with strings and organ. 5. Et Deo qui venias donat et laetitias nos eidem gratias. And to God, who gives favours and happiness, we give thanks. This arrangement represents one in the Series of Band Arrangements compatible with David Willcocks' Carols for Choirs.

Three Sisters is a 1970 British drama film starring Alan Bates, Laurence Olivier and Joan Plowright, based on the 1900 play by Anton Chekhov. Olivier also directed, with co-director John Sichel; it was the final feature film directed by Olivier. The film was based on a 1967 theatre production that Olivier had directed at the Royal National Theatre. William Walton produced the film music using themes by Tchaikovsky, from the official national anthem of the Russian Empire in 1833 - 1917, God save the Tsar!, (the music of which is also included in several hymnals as 'God, the Omnipotent'), and which he featured in his 1812 Overture, to a charming imitation Swan Lake waltz. The original theme for Three Sisters has reappeared as contemporary stage plays and musicals, which are still active today. This short, descriptive arrangement offers an accessible opportunity for bands to experience tuneful music of the period.

Rejoice and sing! was written in celebration of the 95th birthday of Sir David Willcocks. John Rutter writes: I was delighted to be asked by OUP to compose a new carol in his honour. Writing 'Rejoice and sing!' I recalled the many happy Christmas concerts he conducted with the Bach Choir in London's Royal Albert Hall, thinking also of his fondness for quirky rhythms, hence the lopsided 7/8 which runs through much of the music. This arrangement is written for combined Concert Band and Chorus, but may be performed by band alone. It is compatible with the original version except that it is transposed down by one-half step (semi-tone).

His Horn Concerto No. 2 in Eb, completed on 27 May 1783 was possibly the first of the four horn concertos to be written despite its number. It was composed for Mozart's lifelong friend Ignaz Leitgeb whom he liked to poke much fun as the original manuscript demonstrated in the concertos sub heading ' Wolfgang Amad? Mozart has taken pity with the Leitgeb ass, ox and fool. There are also comedic moments in this last movement towards the close where there are gaps in the music and an accelerated coda section.
