Starflash (Concert Band - Score and Parts)
Starflash describes a celestial phenomenon that the composer witnessed in the summer of 2005 gazing at the night sky over the Greek island of Kos. He saw two shooting stars coming from different directions, approaching each other and burning up. This piece begins with a fanfare representing the vastness of space, followed by the flight of the shooting stars. Characteristic Greek dance elements are interwoven with themes in the style of film music. In the middle section, a bolero with an oriental flair sets in, symbolizing the close mainland of Turkey with the lights shining at night. In 1958, Domenico Modugno (1928-1994) song Nel blu dipinto di blu (or Volare) was the Italian entry at the Eurovision Song Contest. Modugno did not win the contest (he became third) but the song - a true sing-along - turned out to be a worldwide hit. In the course of decades, Volare has been translated into various languages, and performed by many artists of repute, like The Gipsy Kings, Dean Martin, Louis Armstrong, Petula Clark, and David Bowie. Alexander Borodin (1833--1887) was a well-known Russian composer, particularly for his opera, . Borodin was in the middle of composing the piece when he suddenly died. Rimsky-Korsakov and another Russian composer, Alexander Glazanov, completed the unfinished score and the opera had its debut in November of 1890. During the overture prelude, a beautiful flowing melody from Act III, entitled "Andante," is an emotional addition to the young band literature. Most musical!
