Nostradamus is probably the best-known prophet of the last 1000 years. He lived at the time of the Inquisition and his predictions and medical therapies as a physician caused him to face the wrath of the church forcing him to flee many times. Following the loss of his family to the plague he devoted himself to clairvoyancy. He predicted many events in history in coded form and although there are many ways to interpret these, many are believed to be accurate and Nostradamus is still considered to be a unique personality. Whether he is denounced as a charlatan or promoted as a myth he has surely moved humankind with his prophecies.Otto M. Schwarz, soundtrack composer since 2001, wrote a cinematographic work about this man, who is probably the best-known prohet of the last 1000 years. 12:30

Guardian Angels gives a musical expression to the legend of Reverend Louis Henri Bahler referring to the use of Psalm 34. North-west Veluwe and in particular Oldebroek (The Netherlands) has a very rich religious tradition which is demonstrated by its monumental churches. They tell the story of a stirring history in which Reverend Bahler played a crucial role. Inspired by his arrival as a pastor in 1870 in the neighbouring Oosterwolde, two big religious communities came into existence with their characteristic churches but this rivalry also resulted in great social unrest. This composition reflects on this striking personality and in particular on the story of the Angel Guard. 'One evening Reverend Bahler has given a sermon in Oldebroek and he walks over the Church path through the pastures to Oosterwolde. On this dark and stormy evening Bahler's opponents are waiting for the pastor in ambush. They want to drown him in a watercourse near the Church path but abandon their plan because Bahler is accompanied by two men. The next day it comes to an encounter between Bahler and his opponents. They repent their, fortunately unexecuted, plan. Bahler firmly believes that on the previous night he walked alone over the Church path, and was not accompanied by two men. It was concluded that it must have been the angels who had protected Bahler.' Psalm 34 is central to this composition and this because of its powerful melody but also because the lyrics of verse 4 of the rhymed version fit in well with the special legend of Reverend Bahler: The Lord's angel gathered round him An invincible heavenly guard, Who tries God's will, around him So he's well guard(ed) A second melodious and harmonic cell is a musical transformation of the name 'Bahler'. This cell is varied in major and minor third chords and sometimes used as the main idea or apotheosis, but also serves as an accompanying cell or as a bridge between other melodic and rhythmic constructions. In 2008 the trombonist, Chris Jeans, was invited to be a featured soloist at a British Trombone Society event. He contacted Stan Kitchen at Studio Music Company to see if he had any new material for trombone. Stan then got in touch with me, as I had already written a piece for another trombone player, Brett Baker. This piece, 'Shout' was programmed for the same event so we needed to find something new for Chris.The title 'Blue Jeans' came to my mind, thus linking a blues-style piece with the obvious reference to Chris's surname. I spoke to Chris and he liked the sound of it so then I had to go away and write a solo to match the title!I managed to get a version with piano accompaniment done in time for Chris to perform at the trombone event and have now had a chance to complete the band version. Chris is a great chap, a good friend and a wonderful trombone player so I hope people enjoy listening to this solo that bears his name.- Rob WiffinDuration: 3.30

Who does not know the famous Te Deum Prelude by Marc-Antoine Charpentier (1634-1704)? This French composer studied both painting and composition in Italy. Returning to France, he took up the post of music master to the dauphin. He collaborated with Molire, working for the Thatre Francais until 1685. He then returned to court and was music director to the Princesse de Guise, composition teacher to the Duke d'Orleans and wrote music for the dauphin's chapel. His Te Deum, of which the Prelude has become well known (particularly in Europe, where it is used as the Eurovision signature tune) is one of many pieces he wrote for important state and religious occasions.Duration: 2:30

When Philip Sparke composed this piece he tried to create a work that characterised man's ability to overcome personal tragedy and the feeling of serenity gained when the tragedy is forgotten. To do this he decided to use the analogy of the sequoia, a generic name for the huge redwood trees, particularly the Californian redwood. The remarkable life cycle of these amazing trees involves them dropping seeds to the ground which require heat, such as a ferocious forest fire to re-grow. In a similar way, the human spirit can actually gain from setbacks - we become stronger after adversity. The music falls into sections which can broadly be characterised as doubt, conflict, catharsis, inner calm and finally triumph. A fantastic major concert work from the pen of Philip Sparke.Duration: 9:15

Handel called Britain 'the ringing isle' because when he moved to London, he heard bells ringing everywhere: great bells in church towers, and handbells in some of the first private houses he visited. The sound of people 'ringing the changes' is a peculiarly British sound of celebration, and it seems a good starting point for a piece celebrating British musical life. Within The Ringing Isle, Dove incorporates some traditional change-ringing patterns, from 'Grandsire Doubles', 'Oxford Treble Bob Minor' and his own version of 'Plain Bob Major'. Handel's phrase also conjures up an image of a magical island, and so this is how Dove envisaged how it must have been to approach Britain from an ocean voyage.

The music from 'Lieutenant Kij?’ was Prokofiev's first attempt at composing film music. In 1933 he was commissioned by the Soviet Union to compose music for a film of the same name and he later adapted this music into an orchestral suite that has since become highly popular. 'Troika', which forms the 4th movement of this 5 movement suite, was composed to give the impression of a fast winter's journey on a troika which is a traditional sleigh pulled by three horses. With the inclusion of sleigh-bells in the orchestration it has been often associated with the Christmas period and still is to this day.
