Quebec Folk Rhapsody - Robert Buckley

The rich heritage of French-Canadian folk music dates back several centuries. Robert has chosen three of these songs to create a musical portrait of this colorful culture. The opening piece is the jaunty and dance-like Monsieur Lecur, followed by the hauntingly beautiful Blanche Comme la Neige. The piece concludes with the spirited march Vive la Canadienne!, which features a drum break and builds to an exciting, rousing finish. The creative use of harmonizations, key changes and dynamic contrasts gives this piece a sophisticated sound and intensity of a much more advanced piece. Dur: 3:35

Belle of the Ball - Leroy Anderson

Like most of Leroy Anderson's efforts, Belle of the Ball is light, effervescent, and devoid of conflict or disharmony. Anderson looked upon the piece as a modern-day American revival -- or revitalization -- of the Viennese waltz tradition. Having said that, the main theme sounds rather unlike a Strauss waltz, but the voice of Tchaikovsky is evident in its playful, fantasy-like character. The melody is rhythmic and comes in short groups of notes, beginning with two notes, then three, then expanding further; the music skates along elegantly. The middle section features a delightful variation on the theme, in which Anderson's gentle-belled sonorities impart a playful innocence. This exclusive Southern band edition by Mark Rogers reintroduces Anderson's enchanting work to new generations of audiences.

Psych et ros - César Franck

It was first performed in Paris in 1888 and was a complete success, but the piece later fell completely into oblivion, and it was only thanks to some meticulous research that it has returned to concert halls. The intricate love affair between Psyche and Cupid is an original story of the Metamorphoseswritten in the 2nd century AD by Apuleius. The tale is about overcoming obstacles in love and their final union. The symphonic poem is divided into three parts and calls for a choir. The movement that is the subject of this arrangement, Psych et rosis positioned at the end of the second part.Franco Cesarini's version for wind orchestra carefully illustrates the nuances of the instrumental colours, and represents a real test aimed at demonstrating the musicality and interpretative skills of orchestras and their conductors.
